When Psychiatric Nursing student Vanessa Reid came up with the idea to organize donations for Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in 2018, she never expected it to end up gaining the attention of the United Nations two years later. Vanessa founded the Homeless Outreach Project for Mental Health, affectionately nicknamed HOP. Last month, HOP won the John Gibbard Memorial Award from the Vancouver Branch of the United Nations Association of Canada (UNA Vancouver). The award is given o...ut annually to a student or group of students dedicated to creating positive change locally or internationally. Being recognized with this award is a reminder to us that what we're doing is noticed and that it’s important, says Vanessa. It has made me feel really motivated to continue promoting change for the homeless community. And regardless of COVID-19 and the state that the world is in, it's still important to try to connect with others and give back where we can, in the safest way possible. Today is our 50th anniversary! Fifty years ago, at 10am on Nov. 19, 1970, Douglas College officially opened. The opening ceremony took place on Douglas Day, a holiday commemorating the first governor of British Columbia, Sir James Douglas. When Douglas College opened it served eight school districts (Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Richmond and Surrey) and had campuses in New Westminster, Richmond and Surrey. There were 1,200 full-time stude...nts, 729 part-time students and 95 faculty. Due to construction at the New Westminster Campus, the opening ceremony was held at Massey Auditorium at New Westminster Secondary School. The auditorium was full of students and invited guests, and the program opened with a performance by the Douglas College Band. Premier W.A.C. Bennett was the principal speaker and declared the college open, capturing the egalitarian spirit of Douglas by saying, Community colleges Will raise the standard of living for everyone in B.C. They are neither technical schools, nor universities, but are all things to all people. Remarks were also delivered by the Minister of Education, Donald Brothers, College Principal, George Wootton, and Chairman of the Douglas College Council, Jack Smedley. Speaking to the new students, Smedley emphasized that the College was totally committed to creating a climate for learning out of which may grow your much needed contribution to improve life’s standards in our time. Fifty years later, Douglas College continues to uphold Smedley’s commitment by providing students with educational experiences that challenge and enlighten, and open doors to lives of passion and purpose. A dinner party exposes personal dramas in our latest production, Blue Window. Join us for a live theatre performance on Zoom Nov. 19 and 20. Presented by the departments of Theatre and Stagecraft & Event Technology, Craig Lucas’s Blue Window offers a view of everyday modern life and how individual dramas affect our relationships. Charming and insecure Libby hosts a dinner party for six neighbours. The play opens on their individual homes and personal struggles as they prepare... for the get-together. When the conflicting personalities come together, conversation is rife with awkward moments, secrets are revealed and private dramas exacerbated, which then explode after the party when everyone returns home. It is a play about longing for intimacy, longing for connection, with folks who are trying to figure out their proximity to one another on a social level and on a private intimate level, as well as how much space they need or the amount of contact they desire, says Deborah Neville, director. It struck me that these are the very same issues we are all facing whilst living through this pandemic, so Blue Window felt like a particularly appropriate choice. To read the full article, and for information about how and when to watch the plays, visit: https://www.douglascollege.ca//private-desires-and-persona

Every Child Matters September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, an awareness day to honour the experiences of thousands of Indigenous Residential School Survivors. It... is also a time to acknowledge the deaths of the Indigenous Children who did not make it home from residential schools. Over 150,000 First Nations, Métis & Inuit children were forced to attend residential schools between the years of 1831 and 1996 (that was only 24 years ago!). Phyllis Webstad is a Residential School survivor, and the name Orange Shirt Day was inspired by her personal story. When she was 6 years old, on her first day of Residential School at St Joseph’s Mission, her brand new orange shirt given to her by her Grandmother was stripped from her. Sept 30 date was chosen, because this was the time of year that Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their homes and required by the government to attend residential schools. We have compiled a list of reading and viewing learning resources on our website - please check them out https://www.thedsu.ca//orange-shirt-day-every-child-matte/
