In his book #TheFlavorEquation, Nik Sharma shares that some scientists classify people into four categories based on our food texture preference. CHEWERS might love brownies, gummies, softer apples, string cheese or oatmeal cookies. CRUNCHERS might love crisp apples, celery, chips or nuts.... SUCKERS might love hard candies and any foods that dissolve slowly. SMOOSHERS might love ice cream, bananas, and yogurt. Which type are you? With Valentine’s Day around the corner and Ontario beets being in season, we’re sharing some beet recipes this week that show off their beautiful pink hue. First up, a bright pink pasta sauce. Simply blend two cups of chopped, roasted beets with your favourite alfredo sauce. Even better, pour over market vendor Pasta Tucci noodles! (For roasted beets, prick them all over with a fork, drizzle with olive oil and wrap in tinfoil. Bake for 90 minutes at 400 F. Let cool, trim, and peel!)

Hello! I’m Karen, and I’m thrilled to be taking over as the social media volunteer for the East York farmers’ market going forward. I wanted to briefly introduce myself and share with you what you can expect from this space before slipping back behind the screen. My partner and I moved to East York five years ago, and we now have two young kids. The market quickly became one of my favourite things about the neighbourhood and was a bit of a lifeline for me while on maternity l...eave; a reason to leave the house, a place to talk and laugh with other adults, a way to share my love of food with my kids. As market season gets closer, you can expect a start date announcement and updates on vendors, and once things get rolling, weekly reminders, COVID-related guidelines and photo recaps. As for right now, in the off-season, this space is still a spot to celebrate seasonal, local food and the people who grow, produce, and make it. I welcome any ideas YOU have about the things you’d like to see here. I think it’s also important to note that this online space is anti-racist, anti-ableist, and welcoming of LGBTQI2S community members. I am doing my best to make this account accessible by including image descriptions for each post. Like so many of you, I am learning about the privileges I have and recognize that there could be ways to make this space even more inclusive. Please feel free to reach out to me in this regard.
