Have you noticed our HELP Unit vehicles on the road? Our Human-centred Engagement and Liaison Partnership (HELP) Unit has their own vehicles that stand out from the average patrol car. HELP’s vehicles are not only for our team members to get to our community members, but they allow for our teams to provide transportation services for community members who need that extra assistance to ensure they can get to and from appointments. The design represents the positive off-ramps that HELP provides to community members that ultimately take them down new paths to health, safety, and independence.

#WoofWednesday’s featured PSD of the week is Gando! Gando is originally from Czech Republic where he was named; but he got his nickname, The Wizard when he joined EPS. Gando recently celebrated his third birthday in February, possibly with a cake made of his favourite food, chicken. Gando is one of our Drug Detection dogs, so he loves tracking when he’s on-duty; his off-duty fun is includes running and playing with his tug. Gando’s handler is pretty sure if Gando wasn’t ...a police dog, he’d be a destructive house pet. Gando’s favourite moment with EPS was his first catch after completing training. His most recent catch was a successful track and location of a domestic violence suspect. Good Boy! Gando’s handler, Cst. Lefurgey, has been with EPS for nearly 10 years, with 1.5 of those in our Canine Unit. He joined because it’s the best job in the Service, and for the good conversation with his canine partner.

Edmonton man charged with possession of child pornography : A 25-year-old Edmonton man is facing one count of possession of child pornography in connection to a month-long investigation that commenced in early September. Detectives began an investigation into Nicholas Baglole-Gaudet, 25, of Edmonton, in September, after child pornography allegations involving the accused were brought to their attention. Investigators executed warrants at Baglole-Gaudet’s southeast Edmonto...n residence on Sept. 9, and confiscated a laptop computer, which investigators later confirmed contained child pornography. Baglole-Gaudet, who operated an unlicensed child daycare home at the time, has since been charged with one count of possession of child pornography and one count of accessing child pornography. Investigators do not believe any of the pornographic images discovered on his laptop involve any of the children left in his care. Currently, the accused has been released with several conditions including no contact with any child under the age of 16 except in the presence of a parent or legal guardian. http://dlvr.it/RmLJP1

PSB concluded its investigation into the matter in early September and forwarded its recommendations to the Office of the Chief of Police, which includes the Executive Director of Legal and Regulatory Services. The three members involved in this incident recently fulfilled their training obligations, at which time Chief McFee completed his review and signed off on the file. The training requirements undertaken by the three officers included courses focusing on ethics and accountability, bias awareness and risk effective and decision making, among others. EPS has also followed up with the individual who initially submitted a complaint about this photo to inform them what investigative and restorative steps have been taken by these officers and the organization. EPS also attempted, though without success, to locate the individual involved in the original photo posted on social media to formally apologize for the members’ actions that day."

BRIARD life with Perzsi and Laz... So today goes down as one of the best and most exciting days of my life!!! Oh my gosh...... I woke up very early again and the sky was just absolutely stunning out so I decided to go for an early morning "walk and wander" with the boys and just follow my feet and see what adventures God had in store for us. I decided to go in the direction of how beautiful the sky was and when we got around to the park by the parliament building a lovely man approached us and asked if he could take some photos of the dogs and since he was a professional photographer he would send them to me by email. So Laz of course was on a "verbal lead" and I decided to let the feisty Perzsi fella off so we could get them into position where he wanted to get the best shot. When suddenly up ahead of us a literal parade of Edmonton police officers on bikes, who knew that was even a thing, came biking by and as they each passed the statue of Constable Ezio Faraone who was killed in the line of duty in 1990 they each touched his knee out of respect which was such a beautifully moving thing to stand there and actually witness... However slight problem was I now had not one but TWO dogs off leash in a public place and as they came right towards me the whole lot of them, I figured I was going to be getting an earful but instead they surrounded us and asked if they could pet the dogs and asked me of course what breed they were and how beautiful they both were!!! They were all so absolutely wonderful and I could hardly contain myself with how excited I was, especially since I was clearly not going to have to be dealing with an "off leash" issue with them. So I told them about how when I was a child and young girl we were taught to have just so much respect and honestly "awe" of our Canadian police force and I have always viewed them as literal "rock stars" when I see them . They all laughed and thanked me for expressing such respect and gratitude for them and said they really appreciated that not only myself but my family were firmly "Back the Blue" and when Paul Walker, the photographer, asked if he could take a photo of all of them beside the statue they were very happy to oblige and then the most amazing part... Perzsi, Laz and I got to STAND with them and this was just the most wonderful day ever!!! And I am just BEYOND proper delighted to have this beautiful photo and truly can the disgusting people who keep vandalizing this statue PLEASE just get a hobby or a life maybe and just STOP!!!

Just after midnight on Sept. 29, West Division patrol officers attempted to do a traffic stop on a grey Mercedes sedan in the area of 156 Street and 100 Avenue after noticing the vehicle had an obscured license plate. The suspect vehicle immediately entered into a criminal flight from police at excessive speeds, committing several traffic infractions. Air 1 took over following the vehicle with the assistance of TRAP when it needed to refuel. A successful tire deflation caused... the vehicle to stop in the Griesbach neighbourhood, where Air 1 returned to assist. The male driver and female passenger proceeded to flee Eastbound through the residential neighbourhood. The female was apprehended quickly by responding officers, while the male scaled a fence into a backyard, discarding an object in the alley before doing so. Air 1 provided updates as the driver scurried around the yard and patio and tried to hide in a window well. A Canine team was then deployed, and PSD Bagheera was sent into the backyard to track for the suspect. The male suspect managed to hop the next fence heading south down Conestoga Street, but was arrested shortly by officers in the area. PSD Bagheera was then used to search for any discarded evidence in the same yard and located a knife in a flowerpot, as well as a baggie with drugs. After reviewing video from the scene, Air 1 also observed the female suspect had discarded something where the vehicle was apprehended. PSD Bagheera located multiple credit cards and ID documents stashed in another window well. The 42-year-old male driver has been charged with criminal flight, suspended driving, traffic offences and breaches. The accused is known to EPS and has had 22 other police involvements in other jurisdictions since 2013 including assault, robbery with a firearm, trafficking, B&E and fraud related occurrences.

On September 10, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Constable John Beatson was awarded the International CPTED Association (ICA) advanced practitioner certification. With this designation, the EPS now has three accredited Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) practitioners in the Collaborative Policing Unit. CPTED, pronounced ‘sep-ted’, is a multi-disciplinary approach to crime prevention that uses urban and architectural design and the management of built and nat...ural environments. CPTED strategies aim to reduce victimization, deter offender decisions that precede criminal acts, and build a sense of community among citizens while reducing, and minimizing the fear of, crime. EPS members now make up 50 per cent of the six ICA accredited practitioners in Canada. The Service is also home to the only accredited course in Canada and was the first police service in the world to earn the certification in January. Congratulations, Const. Beatson, on a well-deserved achievement! If you are interested in learning more or registering for an upcoming course, click here: https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/crimepr/communitysafety/cpted
