We can’t say enough great things about Umoja Operation Compassion Society of British Columbia; this organization is all about empowering and supporting immigran...t and refugee families to create thriving communities. This spring we were excited to work with Umoja as part of our Community Building Program which, now for seven years running, has matched Douglas College students with non-profit organizations to address and support real-world organizational challenges. The students, Murat, Gabriela, Arzo, and Jamie, pictured here with our own Senior Manager of Community Investment, Susan Byrom and Umoja’s President, Amos Kambere, knocked it out of the park by creating a social media plan, as well as some awesome testimonial videos that Umoja is using to boost awareness for their services and organization. Check them out: https://bit.ly/2I8QqWq We think Jaime Kopp, Programs Manager with Umoja says it best: Through the collective efforts and determination of our students, Umoja will be strongly positioned to ensure a sustainable marketing plan that can be adapted and implemented long after the completion of this program. Congrats to our student team at Umoja for your great work!

To us community support means more than just charitable giving; it’s about creating opportunities to get involved with local non-profits that help our communiti...es thrive. Our Community Building Program is just one great example; it’s a partnership with Douglas College that enables students to get their hands on a real-world challenge faced by a non-profit organization, and find innovative solutions to address their need. The Port Moody Arts Centre wanted to boost their reputation as a bustling hub for arts, culture and creativity. Hussain, Yen, Momo and Jagmeet, pictured here with Kelly and Lois from the Port Moody Arts Centre, found a way to do just that. After thorough research they developed the concept for a series of SkyTrain poster ads which have since been brought to life. Port Moody Arts Centre’s Sara McLellan says, Our team of students intuitively understood our needs and helped create a vision for the Arts Centre that is already helping us achieve these goals. Way to go team!

For seven years we’ve banded together with Douglas College to give studentsour up-and-coming community leadersa chance to hone their research and problem solv...ing skills in a project that supports local non-profits as part of the Community Building Program. Khyati, Jennifer and Isabella, pictured here with Douglas College President Kathy Denton, were tasked with finding innovative ways to remove the stigma of second hand fooda challenge that faces Food Mesh, a great organization that matches surplus food to a network of businesses and charities. As Jessica Pausch, CEO of FoodMesh says, We were fortunate to be working with students who felt a strong connection with our vision, and were able to apply their unique skills, ideas and energy to further our impact as a digital food recovery network, helping reduce waste, save money and feed more. A round of applause to our student team on making an impact at Food Mesh!
