Felt great to get out safely for the fundraising dinner last night at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 569 in Long Sault with MPP Jim McDonell. Ruth Currier & team did a great job with the 3 course braised beef ribs, crab cakes, seafood chowder & shrimp plate! Give their page a follow to keep updated on their regular dinners, well worth the trip!

Conservatives continue to call for the Canadian government to stand up to China. They do not deserve to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, plain and simple. They are actively committing genocide against their own citizens. The Chinese embassy in Washington bragged on social media recently about forced sterilization measures being undertaken, going so far as to refer to Uighur women as baby-making machines.... Enough is enough. The Olympics are a privilege to host, not a right. If Canada stands for human dignity, that means calling these horrific acts out.

We are happy to launch our free volunteer income tax clinic once again at my Cornwall constituency office. We are scheduling appointments for safe drop off of documents, that will be later completed by a volunteer and returned by mail. Last year, over 3400 income tax returns were filed by volunteers through this local initiative. ... Click on this Standard-Freeholder story and share with someone who may benefit from this service.

Family Day 2021 is a bit quieter, so I went back in my camera roll to find some of my favourite family photos. Share yours today too! Looking forward to seeing more of my family soon. I love them and grateful for their continued support and encouragement.

Happy 95th birthday to a local South Dundas icon, Lorne Strader! Here's a flashback photo from 2016 at his 90th birthday celebration at the Iroquois Golf Course. Cheers to a good friend and community historian. To many more birthdays Lorne!

Between virtual meetings and calls this week, I reached out and did curbside pickups for some new purchases at local retail stores in Cornwall. Thanks to Rookez-Edge Source For Sports for helping me buy my first pair of ice skates (late to the game, I know!) and Red Cart Books - The Peddler's Cart, a ‘hidden gem’ book store on Pitt Street for local history books on Williamsburg and Martintown. They have literally tens of thousands of used books to choose from. Remember that while businesses can’t open to the public, curbside pickup or delivery is available and will truly help them out!

Happy 100th Birthday today to Hurricane Hazel McCallion, a popular legend in Canadian politics! After retiring in 2014 as Mississauga’s Mayor at age 93 after 36 years of service, she continues to stay active in public life by advising numerous government officials and attending community events in the GTA. Her memoirs Hurricane Hazel: A Life With Purpose was a great read. ... Cheers to many more years of health and happiness Hazel!

I've heard from numerous constituents about their frustrations with the ex-Governor General's scandal and I share that anger. Governors General who serve their entire term get an annual paycheque and an expense program to cover costs after leaving office. The normal term of a Governor General is five years. Julie Payette resigned after only three and a half. Why then, should we provide her the same benefits as those who actually completed the job? As Erin O’Toole says: She ...resigned her role. She should not be able to access the normal courtesies provided to Governors General...The office, sadly, has been sullied. Please sign my petition calling on the Government to: Ensure Julie Payette does not receive the financial benefits normally available to Governors General who honourably serve their full terms Consult opposition parties about the next appointment and re-establish the non-partisan appointment process

Jan 7th, 3:50pm Clarification: Sorry for any confusion about the replies to my recent mailing! I have posted in the comments a copy of the full mail piece that was sent through Canada Post last month. Many didn't recognize the reply slip cut off, so I attached a picture of the full piece. If you still didn't get one, and would like it, please advise us at [email protected] and we can mail you one ASAP, and we can also work with Printing & Mailing Services to make sure ...all postal codes are included for this month's mailing. Original post: The first batch of ’s of reply slips from my recent mailing are back in the office already! Please take a moment to send me your thoughts back in the mail (postage free)- whether it’s good, bad or indifferent feedback. I read each and very single one. It’s a key way for me to gauge our community’s views on issues.

Spent the morning volunteering to distribute wood pellet logs to residents in need through Winchester BMR & House of Lazarus’ Heat for the Holidays program. Thanks to Ken Boje for his leadership on this initiative and for our crew helping on today’s route to deliver 8 skids. We got our exercise in to say the least!

Congratulations to SD&G native and fellow Inkerman Public School alumni Mike Marquette and his team at Atomic Cartoons Inc in Ottawa for winning the 2020 Daytime Emmy Award in Outstanding Special Class Animated Program for their show The Last Kids on Earth (available on Netflix). It's always nice to hear about the local talent who were born and raised in our community. His parents Dawna and John in North Dundas are rightfully proud too. Congrats Mike!

Yesterday, we tragically lost a member of our Canadian Armed Forces at sea. Master Sailor Duane Earle was serving aboard the HMCS Winnipeg and a 30-hour rescue mission concluded yesterday. Please keep his family, friends and comrades in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days. RIP Master Sailer Earle.

I was pleased to join Royal Canadian Legion Br 297 in Cornwall to confirm they will receive nearly $11,000 in emergency funding from the Government of Canada to cover expenses and revenue losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other grants to local Legions will be made in the coming weeks. While I was disappointed it took 9 months to confirm, this assistance will help our Legions keep their doors open. Our Legions not only support local veterans, but operate community halls and donate to numerous local charities and organizations. Simply put: their success is our community's success.

In the lead up to Christmas, I'm going to share some good news stories that we can all use this year as a reminder of how fortunate we are and of the wonderful people living in our community. Our volunteer project to revitalize the Matilda monument site had dozens of families and businesses that purchased $150 walkway bricks to fundraise for the project in Dixon's Corners. I will never forget getting a call last spring from Devries Electric Inc, owned and operated by Jeff DeV...ries and his family, who lives in South Dundas. They stated that they prefer to donate to local causes in the community, as it is their local customers that they given them success in business, and kindly asked where they could mail a donation to the project. I advised they could send it directly to the Municipality of South Dundas, who was doing the accounting for the project. And then they casually wrapped up the call by mentioning that the donation was for $5,000. Their surprising, significant donation helped us reach our fundraising milestone and make the project a reality. Recently, I met Jeff on site in Dixon's Corners to present him with a photo and plaque thanking them for their generous donation. In their typical humble fashion, he didn't want any attention, but I insisted that he recognized for his generous donation and his commitment to support our community. Well done and thank you Jeff & family, DeVries Electric, and all those who supported the beautiful before-and-after of the Matilda Monument project!

This is why persistence pays off. The national and international media have been following up on ending the gay blood ban. We all know it is discriminatory, wrong & outdated. The Liberals are the only party against the immediate change because they claimed more research was needed. Today, a huge national story broke the facts that the Liberals have been given proof that the ban is wrong and dangerous. Yet, they still keep breaking their promise. ... I will not give up on this. The Prime Minister needs to make the safe, easy change immediately. Even more reason to act now that the truth has been revealed.
