Dear Friends, Hard to believe that another season has come to an end. What started off as a very questionable and uncertain season, turned out to be a positive experience afterall. Not many people in this day and age can say that they ran a business, and especially a seasonal business during a world pandemic and made it a positive experience. After arriving on the dock at Esnagami Lodge on May 29th we breathed in that amazing fresh Northern Ontario air, and immedi...ately felt some of that pandemic stress lift off of our shoulders. What a wonderful feeling of being in a place where COVID didn't exist. We still didn't know at that point if we were going to be given the go to open for business, but we were going to get started preparing the camp in hopes that we would be allowed to open. On the first weekend of June, the government gave fishing lodges their permission to open. Hallelujah! With many protocols set in place, we welcomed our first guests. It was very different greeting people on the docks with masks, 6 ft apart and no hand shakes/hugs. Alot of virtual hugs were given. Up until mid July, the meals were carefully packaged and delivered to cabins, which took a lot of work. On July 18th we were allowed to have guests eat in the dining room. It was so nice to hear the chatter and laughter coming from our dining room once again. The summer of 2020 will go down as a very different experince for everybody that is for sure. Although I do not wish to repeat a summer like it, for obvious reasons, we really did make the best of it. We had a great staff which definitely made camp life enjoyable. The staff worked so hard that they got at least 3 years of work done on the camp. For example, Cabin # 4 had its foundation repaired which was a rather big job. New flooring was installed, and the whole cabin was varnished. The staff did a great job on it. Quite a few docks were replaced. Amity cabin received a major facelift and a new name SPRUCE LODGE It received a new shower, new bathroom flooring as well as a new exterior which was composed of vertical logs. Many docks, decks and cabins received a fresh coat of paint as well. Fishing wise, the Pike, Walleye and Brookies thankfully did not get the pandemic memo and didn't practice social distancing. The fishing was as good as always and we had numerous entries into our annual Catch and Release Contest. These will be detailed in our end of the year Newsletter, as well as we will announce the 2 winners from the Catch & Release Contest draw. THANK YOU very much to all of our guests who were able to join us at the lodge this summer....we really appreciated your business. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Fall season. Starting to feel like fall time at Esnagami.
Blog # 6 Week of July 18 24th/20 During the week of July 11 17th, the Esnagami Crew had the week off to relax and recharge. It was nice to have the chance to catch up on some sleep, and do some fishing of course. By Saturday July 18th, we were ready to begin the second half of the season. This particular week we welcomed back the Coopers and the Ouellette groups, and welcomed first time guests Colin and Ben Weir, a father and son who were new to Esnagami this yea...r. It was another quiet week, due to the continued border closure, but a great week none the less. Jeannie Cooper caught and released the largest Pike of the week which was 36. Most of the guests this week entered trophy Pike in the 30 33 range. Weather was still very hot this week, but thankfully this didn't stop the fish from biting. Blog # 7 Week July 25 31st/20 For a week where we were supposed to have 20 guests, only 2 were able to come, because the other 18 were from the United States, which as you know, meant they weren't able to cross the border. (Again .. thanks a lot COVID 19.) Jan and Denise Van de Vooren, were the only guests in camp, and had the lake to themselves and the dining room to themselves as well. This was their first visit to the lodge, and hopefully not the last one. The weather was hot most of the week and the fishing was great. They both entered trophy Pike in the 30 34 range. The one positive thing that can happen when there are such few people in camp, is that we can spend more time with our guests. Eric and I were able to take some time off to head out on the lake with the Van de Vooren's and had a lovely shorelunch with them too. The fishing was awesome that day and we even had the pleasure of seeing a caribou swim from one island to the next. We weren't the only ones to see caribou that week. A few of our guides were fishing after dinner and saw a cow and calf caribou swimming together. Staff continued to work hard around the camp with various projects on the go. The camp is looking great! Thank you so much to all of our guests for travelling all the way up to come to our lodge. We really appreciate it and hope to see you all again.

Week # 5 July 4 10th/20 One lucky couple had Esnagami Lake all to themselves. That's right we only had 2 guests the entire week! Seven other cabins were supposed to be used, however with the border being closed, this prevented our very disappointed American friends from coming up. Bill Prout, who has come up many times over the years with his brothers and friends, brought his lovely wife Edith with him this year. They both entered Walleye into the Trophy Catch and Re...lease Contest. Edith caught the largest Walleye of the week which was 29 1/2 long. Edith's Walleye is actually the largest Walleye to be caught and released so far this summer. Way to go Edith!! Bill caught & released a 24 1/4 Walleye. They had a lot of success trolling in the East end of the lake this week, and caught many Walleye over 20. Weather wise, we still had very hot weather with temperatures in the 30's some days. RENOVATIONS: Although it's very unfortunate that we have lost a lot of business this year, this extra time we have had, has allowed some much needed projects to get done. Cabin # 4 which was built back in 1994, had foundation issues, and was in need of some major leveling. The guys did a wonderful job fixing it, as well as installing new flooring in the main room of the cabin. Our very handy guides, who probably wished they were doing more guiding, have built & replaced 5 new docks this summer. They have done a lot of logging for various projects this summer. With the girls not having to clean cabins everyday, they have been kept busy painting and varnishing. One of our smaller cabins, Amity, had a brand new shower installed, and is currently undergoing a major transformation with vertical logs being used for the exterior walls. It's looking so good that it definitely deserves a new name. When the lodge was purchased many years ago, this is the name that this cabin came with, which has made some people question it and rightfully so, as there are horror books/movies about a small town called Amityville We have always wanted to change the name but could never come up with a replacement we both really liked. If you have any good ideas, we are open to suggestions. Thank you so much to our guests Bill and Edith for coming to the lodge this summer!! We really appreciate it!

Week # 4 June 27 July 3rd/20 What I remember the most about this week is how bloody hot it was!!! The temperatures were well into the 30's most days. (Hard to believe that it had snowed only a couple of weeks prior.) The best ways to cool off during an Esnagami heat wave, is to jump into the lake or go for a boat ride. It's times like these when you appreciate luxuries such as air conditioning back home. One stifling evening, Eric and I went out for a boat ride to...Continue reading
