IT’S NATIONAL DENTIST’S DAY TODAY! Today, Friday, March 5th - is National Dentist’s Day. This unique holiday was established to demonstrate our gratitude and to say thank you to dentists everywhere around the world.... National Dentist’s Day offers everyone an opportunity to acknowledge their dentist’s hard work and dedication to their craft (and to your mouth). This is a great time of the year to introduce the concept of dentists to your small children and prepare them for their first visit. It’s also a good time to remind teenagers on the importance of caring for their teeth and scheduling regular check-ups & cleanings. And of course, for you it is a reminder to schedule an appointment, if it has been over six (6) months since you’ve last seen us. Dentists are doctors who specialize in oral health. It’s their job to prevent, diagnose, and treat oral diseases; monitor the growth of our teeth and jaws; and perform surgical procedures on our pearly whites, when necessary. Dental health is actually very integral to our general health, so today we salute all of the Fairview Dental Center dentists - not just for keeping our teeth looking good, but for also keeping our bodies & overall health in tip-top shape! BIG THANK YOU TO: Dr. Leiberman, Dr. Fownes, Dr. Rahal, Dr. Pamela Eisenhauer, Dr. Andaloro, Dr. Jane Eisenhauer, Dr. Bazdikian, Dr. Gerges, Dr. Prosterman, Dr. Fagan and Dr. DuVal.

THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH IS NATIONAL TOOTH FAIRY DAY At the end of this week, it will be time to celebrate the history of one of dental care’s magical little helpers and to keep encouraging our children to develop good dental hygiene. It’s National Tooth Fairy Day! ... This is a fun time to celebrate, especially if you have smaller children in your family - and is all about taking proper care of your pearly whites - so it’s not just a good lesson for your kids, but for you as well. It all started back in the mid-1920s, as a way to encourage and remind children to take care of their teeth, eat in a healthy way and get a good & restful night’s sleep. The Tooth Fairy actually came to life in 1927, when a small booklet about oral care for children was first printed out and there was a picture of a little pixie encouraging children to practice proper oral health care. After that, nothing could stop the imagination of the younger generation, and the tooth fairy rumours became real for children all around the world. The stories also encouraged children to overcome the trauma of their baby teeth falling out with the promise of a small reward from the Tooth Fairy if they placed their tooth under their pillow at night when they go to sleep. And the rest, as they say, is history.

NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH FEBRUARY 2021 Dental hygiene is one of the most important things we can teach our children. Developing good oral health habits at an early age and visiting the dentist regularly help children get a great start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. While true any time, it is especially important for parents to take care of their child’s and their own oral health during the current Covid pandemic, in order to prevent oral disease.... Teaching kids about good oral hygiene is vital to keeping them healthy. And by developing good habits in one area, it will be easier for kids to develop good habits in other areas of their lives. The national campaign’s slogan covers the basics: Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth for a healthy smile. Education is key to helping children understand why taking care of their oral health should be a priority. If you’re unsure about where to start, the Canadian Dental Association has many resources and tools that can help parents, caregivers and teachers promote good oral health to children. https://www.cda-adc.ca/en/index.asp

FUN FOOD FACT - COCONUTS ARE NATURAL MOUTH CLEANSERS Did you know that coconuts are a natural anti-bacterial food and can help reduce the risk of developing gum disease and cavities? The official term is called Coconut Oil Pulling - which simply means swishing coconut oil around in your mouth.... Studies on coconut oil pulling have shown a statistically significant reduction in gingivitis-induced plaque. The result occurs after ten (10) days of using the oil pulling method. Furthermore, oil pulling has been found to reduce the Streptococcus bacteria, which is a major contributor to tooth decay. The most recommended type of oil is Organic Extra Virgin coconut oil.

ARE YOU TIRED OF HAVING DULL LOOKING, WORN OUT TEETH? VENEERS COULD BE THE SOLUTION Veneers are custom made, porcelain facings that are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth to whiten them, close spaces & gaps, to straighten them out, and/or repair chipped or worn out teeth. The veneers are only about one millimeter (1 mm) thick - which is roughly the thickness of a fingernail - and that same thickness is shaved off the natural tooth surface, so when the veneer is bond...ed to the tooth, the tooth doesn’t feel or look any denser. This minimally invasive preservation of your strong enamel tooth structure provides for a longer-lasting restoration. And at Fairview Dental, our highly skilled and experienced cosmetic dentists will create a dental design individualized and custom made just for you. For good candidates, the benefits of porcelain veneers are many: results come in as few as two (2) dental appointments; the veneer characteristics are tailored to your unique facial features; they are natural & lifelike in appearance; and the results are permanent. Call us now to book an appointment to discuss if porcelain veneers are right for you.

YOUR MOUTH & HEART CONNECTION Whenever you visit a doctor or a health specialist, it is very important to keep these medical professionals up to date on your oral health issues. You should always inform your doctor if you have been diagnosed with a type of periodontal disease or if you have any type of gum inflammation / periodontitis. Likewise, you should also inform your Fairview Dental dentist if you have been diagnosed with any form of cardiovascular disease, have experie...nced any cardio problems recently, or have a history of heart issues. The reason is that there is convincing evidence of an indirect link between periodontitis (inflammatory gum disease) and changes in blood vessels that cause cardiovascular (heart and related blood vessels) disease and problems. We now know that good oral hygiene reduces bacteria not just in your mouth and oral cavity, but all over your body - and good diet and exercise strengthens your cardiovascular health. The healthier you keep your mouth and body, the better your chances of reducing your risk for both gum and heart disease!

INVISALIGN TEETH STRAIGHTENERS THE CLEAR ALTERNATIVE TO BRACES Invisalign is a revolutionary new treatment that completely eliminates the need for the metal bracket and wire braces of old, in favor of clear acrylic aligners that gently guide our patient’s teeth into place. Fairview Dental patients wear an average of twenty to thirty (20-30) sets of aligners, over a period of twelve to eighteen (12-18) months in order to achieve their best desired results and all without p...ainful wire tightening appointments or even any food restrictions. With Invisalign, our patients no longer need to dread the monthly visits to have their wires tightened, because the system straightens teeth without the use of any such wires whatsoever. And while traditional braces place restrictions on what foods patients can eat for fear of pulling a wire or bracket loose (ie - favorites like corn on the cob, taffy, and chewing gum), our Invisalign patients can remove their aligners at any time, allowing them to eat anything they want, whenever they want it. These removable aligners make cleaning your teeth a breeze as well. Invisalign requires no elastic bands and patients no longer have to worry about wires coming loose and cutting up the inside of their cheeks and lips. Another bonus - The average Invisalign treatment takes just twelve to eighteen (12-18) months, as opposed to the two (2) years necessary for most patients who wear traditional braces. Call us now to book an appointment to begin your Invisalign journey to a straighter and perfectly-aligned smile! :)

NATIONAL GUM CARE MONTH / HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED GUM SURGERY? September is National Gum Care Month - and we all know that gum disease can be a very aggressive infection and if left untreated, it can destroy the vital periodontal structures that protect teeth and maintain their attachment to the jaw. The end result will be tooth loss, which harms both your health and physical appearance. Controlling gum disease and ultimately restoring health and appearance to damaged gums an...d tooth-supporting bone requires aggressive treatment and sometimes even surgical measures. Periodontal (gum) surgery treats moderate to advanced cases. In order to treat moderate and advanced gum disease, surgical procedures are necessary, such as the following: Crown Lengthening; Pocket Depth Reduction; Soft Tissue Grafts; Bone and Tissue Regeneration; Ridge Augmentation If you are experiencing pain and/or a combination of any of these symptoms, please call us right away so that we can examine your situation more closely: - Red, swollen or tender gums or other pain in your mouth. - Bleeding while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food. - Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth. - Loose or separating teeth. - Pus between your gums and teeth. - Sores in your mouth. - Persistent bad breath. Recent advances in periodontal treatment allow us to now place medications directly at the site of infection. This is often used in conjunction with scaling and root planing. In addition, an antimicrobial rinse is sometimes used after some procedures. And a home care routine specific to the patients individual needs will be prepared to prevent the patient from relapsing.

THREE (3) REASONS TO VISIT YOUR DENTIST REGULARLY Here are the three (3) main reasons why regular dentist appointments are important: 1. It saves you money.... A regular cleaning is a lot less expensive than having to deal with crowns, tooth replacements, and other oral surgeries and procedures. You might think its wise to skip an appointment now to save money, but youll end up paying for it a lot more in the long run - in time, money, stress, and potentially a lot of pain. 2. Catching minor problems before they get worse. We can spot problems before they are big enough to cause any sort of discomfort to you. As professionals, we can see the early signs of gum disease, tooth decay, and a number of other issues that are prone to arise. Even though you might feel as though everything is okay, we can double check and take preventative measures to make sure the problem doesnt worsen. 3. We clean your teeth better than you do. Weve taught you the proper way to brush and floss, but some things you just cant do on your own. We are professional teeth cleaners; anything you miss we will make sure to take care of any time you are in for a cleaning. If you haven't seen us in the past six (6) months - it's time! Please call or email our office and we will book you an appointment that fits your schedule. We are open seven days a week and during the evenings to better serve you! :D

FOUR FUN & CREATIVE APPS TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR ORAL CARE ROUTINE In todays advanced technological age, our smartphones are used for almost everything these days! So, why not also use them for helping you maintain healthy brushing habits and excellent oral health care? Here are four downloadable apps that are fun to use (for both adults & children), that will give your daily oral hygiene routine a helping hand:... 1) Dental Expert You only visit us @ Fairview Dental twice a year, so why not have an expert by your side for the rest of the time? The Dental Expert app is a handy patients guide which describes numerous dental procedures in greater details and also answers the most frequently asked questions you may have about many different oral health care topics. 2) Brush DJ We all know that brushing twice a day is important, but it is also crucial for each brushing session to last at least two (2) minutes long. However, there is usually not a clock in your bathroom, so keeping track of how long you brush is sometimes difficult. Brush DJ is an app that will play EXACTLY two (2) minutes from one of your favorite songs found on your phone (in your songs list/library) and this way you can be assured that you always brush for the proper amount of time recommended by dentists. 3) Chomper Chums (Virtual Pet) We all know that children are fussy brushers! And sometimes it takes some creativity to get them into the proper habits of brushing & flossing on a daily basis. Chomper Chums is an oral health care app designed to help parents teach children proper brushing techniques, all the while keeping them engaged and entertained. Children using the app can earn rewards for brushing their teeth - which they then use to buy pretend food or drink for their virtual Chomper Chums Pet. BONUS - the app encourages children to choose healthy food options for their on-screen friends so that they learn about proper meal choices in addition to building better oral hygiene habits. 4) BracesHelp This is an app for people who are thinking about getting braces (either traditional metal ones or clear ones like Invisalign). The app has numerous helpful tips, pieces of advice, photos and videos regarding the proper way to care for your new braces.

BABY TEETHING ADVICE FOR NEW MOMS & DADS On average, babies start teething around the time they turn six (6) months old. And as much as it can be exciting to see your childs first tooth poking through, there are also some disruptive symptoms that you will have to deal with as a new parent. Overall, teething babies will become cranky and more upset than normal. You may not know why they are acting this way, as these teething symptoms can begin a full 3-5 days before you even ...see the tooth pushing through their gums. However, once the tooth erupts into the mouth, the pain and discomfort will subside quickly. Here are a few home remedies that you can use to help lessen your babys symptoms: 1) Children Ibuprofen or Tylenol to minimize the pain. 2) Teething Rings & Toys to chew on, which helps relieve the pressure. 3) Teething Gels which freezes the gums area using a safe, topical anesthetic. Teething usually ends around the age of 23-28 months and once these last teeth poke through, your child will not have any more painful symptoms until years later when their wisdom teeth come in!

TOOTH EXTRACTION PROCEDURE AND AFTER CARE At Fairview Dental, our Dentists do their best to maintain and care for all of our patients smiles. The last thing we want to do is remove a tooth from your mouth. But if there is no safe alternative, we then sometimes have to conduct a tooth extraction. This is always considered a last resort, but if the tooth/teeth are decayed and damaged beyond repair, we will have to pull them out in order to stop or prevent suffering for the... patient. During a tooth extraction process, the area surrounding the damaged tooth is numbed with local or general anesthesia. We may need to remove a small amount of gum tissue and bone in order to fully expose the tooth - which makes it easier to extract as one full tooth, rather than having the tooth break apart into multiple pieces. Once the tooth is removed, we fill the hole with gauze to help stop the bleeding. In some instances, we will put a few stitches in place to help promote the gums to close over the edges. After the procedure is completed, we recommend that each patient follow the post-op instructions carefully. Usually, an antibiotic is prescribed to prevent infection. And to reduce any pain & swelling, we recommend applying an ice pack to the affected area until the swelling subsides. Of course, we want you to keep the area clean and avoid smoking for at least the first 24 hours. Another good suggestion would be to gently rinse out your mouth with a salt water solution for the next couple of days following the extraction. Once your mouth is healed, we can then discuss replacing the lost tooth with an implant, a bridge or possibly a set of dentures. At Fairview Dental, we offer many solutions to replace any tooth that needs extracting, so you can keep your beautiful smile with a full set of pearly whites. :D

UPSET STOMACH? THINK TWICE BEFORE REACHING FOR ANTACIDS We all occasionally experience stomach cramps, bloating and/or constipation as many of our favorite foods (like dairy, meat, fish, sugar, alcohol and coffee) contain high levels of acid. And pharmaceutical companies continue to mass market a number of different antacid options to combat this issue. The problem is that antacids can have damaging side effects on your teeth. To ensure proper digestion, your body will prod...uce a specific amount of acid to break down the food particles. However, when you take antacid pills or liquids too often, your body can actually react by producing even more acid than normal. This, in turn, leads to heartburn and indigestion, and a vicious cycle of continually using antacids occurs. Also, in their attempt to neutralize and block acids, antacid medications also inhibit the absorption of calcium and protein - both of which are vital components in strengthening your teeth and jaws. Here are a few suggestions to avoid the negative effects of antacid medications: 1) To start with, try and consume foods & drinks that are low in acid. 2) To combat stomach issues, try using Baking Soda (which also cleans your teeth!) 3) If you must use antacids, use in moderation (and buy the sugar free ones). 4) Always rinse your mouth after chewing or swallowing an antacid to further protect your teeth. 5) Wait approximately thirty (30) minutes before brushing your teeth, after taking an antacid, in order to safeguard your enamel.

NATURES TOOTHBRUSH = SCRUBBER FOODS It is not always practical to carry around or have immediate access to a toothbrush, but weve all had instances where we really could have benefited from brushing our teeth. Perhaps you just had some garlic at lunch and forgot that you were heading into a work conference; or you need a quick freshening up before meeting with your friends at the movies.... Next time you are in a pinch, grab one of the following food items - called Scrubber Foods - all of which will naturally clean your teeth, remove plaque and leftover particles, increase your saliva flow and help freshen your breath as well: Apples / Celery / Radishes / Carrots / Broccoli / Cucumbers As you can see, most Scrubber Foods are crisp, firm and high in fiber. Please note that these food items cannot replace traditional brushing and flossing, but eat them at the end of a meal or snack and they can keep your mouth relatively fresh until you have a chance to properly brush & rinse.

FAIRVIEW DENTAL OFFERS EMERGENCY SERVICES Here at Fairview Dental, our dentists & supporting staff truly care about every aspect of your oral health and well-being! But we know that sometimes accidents happen and that an emergency dental issue could arise at any moment no matter how careful you are. Hey Cest la vie! If you ever find yourself with a dental emergency, please have a look at this handy guide below and then come in to see us ASAP so that we can minimize the ...long term damage. We say ASAP and we mean it our clinic is opened late every day of the week and we are also open all day on both Saturdays and Sundays. Major Toothache: Repeatedly rinse out your mouth with warm water to ensure that nothing is lodged between your teeth or your gum line. If there is any swelling, apply an ice pack on the affected area to reduce inflammation. Broken or Chipped Tooth: It might sound weird, but try and save any pieces of your actual tooth/teeth and bring these with you when you see the dentist. If you are bleeding, gently apply pressure with some sort of gauze to stop the flow. Tooth Knocked Out: In order to save the tooth timing is crucial! You only have an hour or so to keep the tooth alive so that it can be re-attached in your mouth. You must come see us right away (within 1 hour of the event) and we can save the tooth. First, pick up the tooth by the crown (and not the root) and place the tooth in a jar of milk to preserve it. Secondly, come in to see us right away for an emergency appointment.

FIVE (5) SECRETS TO WHITER TEETH There is a common myth believed by the general public that your teeth can only become stained if you are a smoker, a red wine enthusiast or a coffee drinker. But the fact of the matter is - there are many other reasons why your teeth could become dull and yellow over time. Here are five (5) secrets to help you obtain (and maintain) a whiter, brighter and healthier smile:... 1) Water, Water Everywhere When eating a meal, swish your mouth with water after every few bites this will loosen any damaging agents and wont let them remain in contact with your teeth for an extended period of time. Once you finish your meal, you should also rinse your mouth with water again to ensure that you got rid of all the bacteria leftover from the food you have just eaten. 2) Fruits & Veggies When you eat a hard fruit (ie an apple) or a crunchy vegetable (ie celery), this helps scrub your teeth by removing the particles and bacteria that may be lingering in your mouth. As they say, An apple a day, keeps the doctor away! 3) Blowing Bubbles Chewing gum (make sure it is sugarless!) is another great way to loosen food particles and it also creates an abundance of saliva which will wash away the acids and bacteria that stay on your teeth after eating a meal. 4) Know the Hidden Culprits As aforementioned, cigarettes, coffee and red wine are the most common staining agents. But there are many other hidden foods & drinks that do just as much damage. Whenever possible, try to avoid or minimize = tea, sports drinks, sugary juices, strawberries, yogurt, soya sauce and tomatoes. If you do enjoy one or more of the foods listed above, just make sure to take extra precautions so that you keep your teeth their whitest. 5) Good Ol Standard Of course, nothing beats a proper and regimented brushing and flossing routine. Brushing at least two (2) times a day and flossing at least once (1) a day is the best formula for success and overall whiter teeth.

ARE YOU A CHOCOLATE LOVER? READ ON! Normally, Dentists are not the biggest fans of chocolate. Over the years, we have seen first hand what the high amounts of sugar contained in chocolate bars and most candy has done to our patients teeth and gums Not good! However, when you factor in the TYPE OF CHOCOLATE being consumed, there is actually a case to be made that dark chocolate may be beneficial to your oral (and overall) health.... Dark chocolate, especially seventy percent (70%) cocoa or higher, has recently been labeled a superfood. That is because research has shown that the cocoa bean contains large amounts of healthy anti-oxidants like flavonoids, polyphenols & tannins. The darker the chocolate is, the higher the concentration of these healthy ingredients. And these anti-oxidants help stabilize and strengthen your oral tissues; as well as protecting your mouth against harmful bacteria. They also promote extra saliva production - which is your mouths first line of defense against gum disease, tooth decay, cavities, and even bad breath. Now, we are not saying to go out there and start gorging on all kinds of chocolate related products, but we do recommend that you swap out your traditional milk chocolate treats (which are processed with high amounts of sugar) with foods that contain a higher percentage of cocoa, like the darker varieties of chocolate.

WHAT IS "DRY MOUTH"? (AND REMEDY SUGGESTIONS) Do you often feel like your mouth gets very dry between meals? Are you always reaching for your water bottle or other liquids in order to moisten your lips and the inside of your mouth? You may have what is commonly called Dry Mouth which simply put, is a lack of normal saliva production & flow. The technical term in the Dentist World is called Xerostomia.... Proper saliva production is a very important aspect in keeping your mouth, tongue, gums, inner cheeks and teeth in healthy condition. Some of the functions of saliva include: keeping your oral cavity clean with its flushing and washing action; reducing plaque via its antibacterial property; lubricating your mouth to help with chewing food and speaking; and initiating the digestion process of certain food groups. Home Remedies = brush twice daily, using toothpaste with a high fluoride content; clean between your teeth (ie - flossing) every day; use a high fluoride mouthwash; and limit the amount & frequency of sugar intake in your diet. If you cannot fix the problem on your own, then a salivary stimulant should be introduced. A salivary stimulant is basically artificial saliva - and can be found in your local pharmacy in spray or lozenge formats. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact us and we can discuss in further details and offer additional suggestions to help.

BRIGHTER SMILES FOR PREGNANT MOMS If you or your loved one is expecting in the near future, then first of all Congratulations from the Fairview Dental Center! And secondly, we wanted to remind you that it is important not to lose focus on maintaining your bright & healthy smile during your full pregnancy. With everything going on at once like doctors appointments, decorating the nursery and buying all the baby furniture and clothing, it is very important that you do not lo...se sight of your oral health. Not just for you; but for your baby as well! A regular brushing and flossing regimen will never be as important as they are now, during your pregnancy. Gum disease can cause symptoms like swollen or bleeding gums, but it has also been linked with certain pregnancy complications, like premature birth. To ensure that your smile stays healthy during your pregnancy, and that your baby stays safe, we recommend the following: 1) Always clean your teeth and mouth on a regular basis, paying special attention to your gums. Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of bacteria and plaque along the gumline and you must keep this area clean. 2) Enjoy a balanced and nutritious diet. Foods that are processed (artificial colors and flavours) or high in sugars will increase your chances of developing gum disease and/or cavities. 3) Talk to your Fairview Dental Dentist about when to schedule a checkup during your pregnancy. The best time that we recommend coming in is during your second trimester. Like any new mom, you want to give your baby the best possible start. With preventative measures such as brushing and flossing every single day, youre already well on your way. :D

ENERGY DRINKS & SPORTS BEVERAGES WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW A common misconception is that Energy and Sports drinks have less sugar than your average cola. However, the truth is that these types of drinks can be even more damaging to your teeth and smile than regular soft drinks. Energy and Sports drinks launch a two-tier attack on your mouth with their high amounts of sugar and large quantities of acid. Products like Gatorade, Powerade, Monster and Fuel have the same (if not ...more) sugar than Coke, Pepsi or 7-Up. And to make matters worse, they also contain high amounts of acid, which corrodes your smile and causes tooth decay. With the market for energy drinks almost tripling in the past few years, it is important to know the damage you could be doing so, here are a few helpful tips to minimize the effects: 1) Rinse out your mouth with water or chew some sugar-free gum immediately after consuming an energy or sports drink. This rebalances the pH level in your mouth which will counteract the acid. And dont brush your teeth for a while after drinking these types of drinks as your enamel is still soft and brushing can cause further damage. 2) Drink sports & energy drinks before you become dehydrated, not after. That way, youll have the extra saliva needed to protect your teeth and gums. 3) Stick to healthier options when you are NOT working out or exerting a lot of energy. Sports drinks are meant to rehydrate and replenish when youre playing sports or working out in the gym. But whenever you can, consider alternatives like water. You can even purchase electrolyte drops to put in your water which will give you the same benefits as drinking a sports drink. Bottom Line = Take care of your mouth and it will take care of you!

TEETH GRINDING - PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS Do you grind your teeth at night? If so, not to worry, as Bruxism (the medical term for Teeth Grinding) is a very common symptom that many people are currently experiencing, especially during these stressful times. Please read below for some of the problems that can occur if this issue is left untreated, as well as handy tips on how to remedy the situation.... Problems that can occur over time: 1) Headaches many of our patients complain of headaches (usually located around the temple region) in the morning or throughout their sleep. This occurs because the jaw muscles are being overworked by constant and repeated clenching and grinding. 2) Jaw Discomfort this is also an early sign of Bruxism, where a patients jaw will feel tight or achy. The jaw may even click or pop repeatedly throughout the day or while chewing gum/food. 3) Damage To Your Teeth people who grind their teeth are far more likely to damage the actual teeth themselves. When you constantly grind your teeth together, you wear away at the surface and enamel to the point where you can create a shift in your mouth which would give you a lop-sided smile. Not to mention the pain it would cause from talking or eating. Treatments to help: 1) Stress Less we know this is easier said than done (Corona anyone?!), but the less anxiety and stress you have in your life, the less prone you will be to grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw while you sleep. 2) Mouth Guards there are a number of products on the market to stop Bruxism, the most popular being a custom-fitted mouth guard that you wear at night while you sleep. The guard prevents you from causing damage and pain to your teeth and jaw. 3) Cosmetic Dentistry this is only recommended if there is already some damage to your mouth due to repeated teeth grinding. The Fairview Dental cosmetic dentists can help you restore any chipped, cracked or broken teeth due to this issue. We can also recommend other procedures like porcelain veneers, bonding or dental crowns to improve the look of any teeth that need restoring. We will be re-opening our offices very soon - and will be able to discuss the best method for you to help with your teeth grinding at that time.

TO ALL THE GUM CHEWING ENTHUSIASTS Are you a big gum chewer? Do you chew gum to keep your breath fresh? Or perhaps you chew it to relieve stress? Or is it just a habit that you picked up as a kid and it continued through your teen years and into adulthood? Well, you are not alone! Ever since Thomas Adams invented chewing gum way back in 1870, millions of Canadians consider it a necessity in order to keep their mouths clean and fresh on a daily basis.... The good news is that chewing gum CAN help fight cavities! Chewing gum produces large amounts of saliva in your mouth and as we all know, saliva is a natural component used in cleaning your teeth by soaking up and destroying cavity producing acids. It has also become a great way to increase saliva production for those patients who are experiencing dry mouth. In addition to the above mentioned benefits, gum chewing also helps with plaque reduction clinical studies have shown that chewing gum every day can reduce the plaque buildup in your mouth by up to thirty-five percent (35%). So whats the catch? (Theres always a catch when something sounds too good to be true!) Well, the catch is that the gum you choose MUST BE SUGAR FREE. If you chew gum containing sugar (as opposed to artificial sweeteners), you will be doing a lot of damage to your teeth and gums which is the exact opposite when chewing a sugarless brand of gum. So, go ahead and enjoy your favorite brand of gum and chew away! But make sure you choose a sugarless product in order to reap the benefits explained above.

FOODS THAT WHITEN YOUR TEETH NATURALLY! There is no substitute for having a regular routine of brushing and flossing. This is still the best method to protect against tooth decay & gum disease and it also keeps your teeth nice and brightly white. But with our offices temporarily closed, we are unable to offer those patients (who need a little boost) our famous Teeth Whitening services.... However, there are some common, everyday foods out there, that when you eat them, they actually help to keep your smile bright, white and healthy and its all done naturally! 1) Apples & Strawberries both contain Malic Acid which helps remove stains from your teeth. Malic Acid also whitens enamel. 2) Celery, Carrots & Pears these foods have a high water content level. When you eat these types of foods, your saliva production increases which helps wash away any bacteria in your mouth. 3) Pineapples this is the only fruit which contains Bromelain the same substance found in many stain-removing toothpastes! 4) Broccoli apart from being a natural scrubber (due to their shape and texture), broccoli is high in fiber and iron, which results in a lower risk of inflammation in your mouth. 5) Dairy milk, cheese and yogurts are high in calcium which is essential for healthy and strong bones (including your pearly whites!) Be sure to include one or more of these foods into your diet each and every week and your smile will continue to brighten in a natural way.

TOP FIVE (5) COMMON BAD HABITS THAT HARM YOUR TEETH We all have rituals and habits and sometimes we dont even realize that we are doing them! Its like our mind is on auto-pilot. However, there are certain everyday habits that people are doing, that are harming their teeth. And with Dental Offices like ours being closed for the time being, we want to encourage you to abide by these guidelines to avoid any unnecessary accidents.... Here are the five (5) most common culprits that are detrimental to your smile: 1) Biting on hard objects: People chew on ice, gnaw on rock candy & jawbreakers, bite their pen or nervously chomp on their fingernails. But this sort of behavior can wear down the enamel of your teeth and if you bite down on a hard enough object, you can very easily chip or crack a tooth. 2) Drinking colas and other high acidic drinks: The acid in sodas and colas can corrode your teeths enamel over time. It can also weaken the surface of your teeth as well as lead to discoloring. Try to cut down on heavily acidic soft drinks and substitute them with water and natural beverages. 3) Teeth grinding: For some, this occurs during highly stressful situations (like the one we are in right now). For others, tooth grinding occurs at night while the person is asleep. Either way, it is damaging to your mouth. 4) Obsessive cleaning & brushing: We all know it is extremely important to have a daily routine of brushing and flossing. But if you brush too hard or too many times a day, this can actually have an adverse effect and can wear down the enamel on your teeths surface. You can also irritate the gums which can lead to periodontal issues. 5. Using your teeth as tools or package openers: Many people like to use their teeth as a substitute for a pair of scissors, a bottle or can opener or even a knife Bottom line is DONT DO THAT! Your teeth are for eating and flashing your big, beautiful smile only.

THE BENEFITS OF POMEGRANATES YOUR MOUTH WILL THANK YOU! In your next online grocery delivery order (or if you venture out wearing your mask and gloves) why not pick up a few of natures best teeth & mouth purifying fruits? The pomegranate! The pomegranate is known around the world as the Jewel of Winter and has lately been gaining accolades for its disease fighting abilities. This is largely due to the high levels of antioxidants present in the flesh, rind and seeds of ...the fruit. And their ruby red seeds may actually be a possible alternative for the treatment of dental plaque bacteria. If you enjoy eating a pomegranate now and again (or drinking its juice) then your teeth and gums are in luck! Clinical studies have shown that eating and/or drinking pomegranate inhibits dental plaque formation. And since they are chock full of calcium, this helps strengthen your bones and teeth as well. In scientific terms, pomegranates contain polyphenols, tannins, ellagic acid and anthocyanins all of which are powerful antioxidants that support a healthy heart and help prevent cancer. And the anti-inflammatory properties of the fruit also slow down cartilage deterioration, which could help your body by deterring the onset of any osteoarthritis. Who would have thought that this commonly found fruit exhibits antibacterial and astringent activity? And one of the main benefits is that it strengthens your gums and helps tighten any loose teeth in your mouth. So why not make pomegranates part of your weekly breakfast routine (or any time of day, for that matter) and your mouth will soon be experiencing the wonderful benefits that this fruit has to offer!

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BABYS TEETH DURING THE CORONA PANDEMIC Each year, many infants and toddlers suffer from tooth decay (just like us adults) but with Dental offices & clinics closed for the next little while, it is more important than ever to protect your childs teeth. This can be done by following the proper guidelines. The two (2) biggest contributors to this issue areMilk and Sweet Liquids. When your baby drinks these types of products, the natural bacteria in their m...ouths feed on the sugars that these liquids contain. In turn, acid is produced in your babys mouth, which can then attack their tooth enamel and cause cavities. Here are a few helpful tips to follow: 1) Only Fill Baby Bottles with Milk Or Formula. If you do choose to give your child fruit juice or another type of sugary drink, please make sure you only do so in a sippy cup so that the sugar doesnt sit at the front of their mouths (ie on their teeth) for too long at a time. 2) Frequently Clean Your Babys Teeth and Gums. Even before your childs first tooth comes in, it is always important to gently wipe their gums with a wet towel or gauze after they are finished eating. And to continue to do so after the initial few teeth start growing in. 3) Dont Dip Pacifiers in Anything Containing Sugar. Some parents will dip their childs pacifier in sweet substances like honey or even sugar. Of course, this can be very damaging for baby teeth, so it is best not to do this sort of thing. Stay safe & healthy everyone!

SIX (6) WAYS TO KEEP YOUR TOOTHBRUSH GERM-FREE We all know how important washing your hands can be during your self-isolation, but equally as important is making sure your toothbrush is just as clean. You brush your teeth in the morning, rinse the toothbrush quickly underwater and then throw it into a cup that youve been using for several months Does this scenario sound familiar?... If so, then this article is for you! And for the most efficient brushers, below are some handy tips to make your process even better. Without proper care, germs can easily live and thrive between the bristles of your toothbrush. Therefore, we have comprised for you six (6) handy tips to ensure that you keep your toothbrush extremely clean: 1) Always wash your hands before and after you brush your teeth. 2) Thoroughly rinse your toothbrush under hot water both before and after brushing. 3) Be sure to store your toothbrush properly upright, allowing it to air dry. Do not store your toothbrush in a closed casing, as this will allow bacteria a chance to grow. When unhealthy bacteria is exposed to oxygen for long periods of time, it dies quite quickly. **4) If you are sick, use your current toothbrush throughout the illness, but then as soon as you recover, immediately throw away that toothbrush and buy/use a new one. 5) As a rough guideline, you should be replacing your toothbrush every three (3) months. Unless it is really falling apart (wear & tear), then you should change it sooner. 6) And lastly, NEVER share your toothbrush with anyone! You could potentially transfer harmful bacteria into your system as these types of germs are easily passed from person to person by sharing a common toothbrush. HAPPY BRUSHING! :D

ITS NATIONAL DENTISTS DAY TOMORROW! Tomorrow (Friday, March 6th) is National Dentists Day. :D This unique holiday was established to demonstrate our gratitude and to say thank you to dentists everywhere around the world.... National Dentists Day offers everyone an opportunity to acknowledge their dentists hard work and dedication to their craft (and to your mouth). TODAY IS NATIONAL TOOTH FAIRY DAY! Today is a day to celebrate the history of one of dental cares magical little helpers and to keep encouraging our children to develop good dental hygiene. Its National Tooth Fairy Day! ... This is a fun time to celebrate, especially if you have smaller children in your family and is all about taking proper care of your pearly whites, so its not just a good lesson for the kids, but for you as well. It all started back in the mid-1920s, as a way to encourage and remind children to take care of their teeth, eat in a healthy way and get a good nights sleep. The Tooth Fairy actually came to life in 1927, when a small booklet about oral care for children was first printed out. After that, nothing could stop the imagination of people and the tooth fairy rumours became real for children all around the world. The stories also encouraged children to overcome the trauma of their teeth falling out with the promise of a small reward from the tooth fairy.

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH 101 SOME HANDY TIPS & SUGGESTIONS When you brush your teeth the correct way, it improves your overall health, well-being and appearance. The funny thing is, it doesn't take much longer than brushing the wrong way. As we grow into adults, brushing your teeth tends to become an automated process - often times being performed when you are half asleep. At this point in your life, you probably don't even realize the specific methods you use in your daily br...ushing routine. Most people are completely unaware of areas in their mouth that they are continually missing. And then before you know it, poor brushing patterns become an official bad habit. Here are some handy tips to avoid having your brushing routine becoming stagnant: Always invest in a soft to medium bristled toothbrush. Make sure you buy the right size toothbrush - one which suits your mouth. It has been proven that electric toothbrushes can be more effective than regular ones. Use a toothpaste which contains fluoride and one that is recommended by the CDA. Brush for at least two (2) minutes during each session. If you cant brush after meals, at least rinse with water. Make sure to replace your toothbrush every two to four (2-4) months and especially after an illness. Handy Tip - microwave your damp toothbrush for one minute every month to kill bacteria. Brush up and down in a circular motion, and not just side to side. Do not brush too hard or youll harm your teeth and gums area. Dont forget these hidden areas - your gums, cheeks and hard palate. Always rinse your toothbrush bristles (and even the handle!), and dont forget to dry it after every use.

TEENAGERS AND COSMETIC DENTAL WORK Its hard to be a teen in the modern world and especially rough on them if their teeth and smiles are not perfect like the Hollywood stars. So, should your teenager have cosmetic dental work done? The answer to that question is that it really depends on each individual & family. ... On one side of the debate is that waiting until becoming an adult can be hurtful for a teens self image. He or she may not want to wait until adulthood to have a perfect bite/smile and to be able to start chewing foods properly. Also, its much easier for a teenager to deal with wearing braces and retainers than it is for an adult in the busy working world not to mention the stigma that adults will have to deal with until their teeth are fully fixed. Of course, parents must always keep in mind that the jaw and facial growth of their child is not fully complete until usually the late teens, so that is something to consider. The good news is that dental technology has come a long way in recent years. One example being the clear braces solution that we offer which is called Invisalign. It is now considered an art form as well as a science, and here at Fairview Dental, we have many options and solutions for all of your teens cosmetic dental needs. Feel free to contact us if you are considering getting braces for your teenager and we can discuss with you the variety of options that we offer.

DENTAL CROWNS AND CAPS WHEN ARE THEY NEEDED? A dental crown (sometimes knows as caps) fits over the entire top of the tooth above the gum line. Crowns cover, protect, seal and strengthen a tooth. A crown is needed when a filling just will not work. A crown may be made of white porcelain, or porcelain fused to gold alloy. There are many situations that may call for a crown:... - Deep decay. If a tooth has decay so deep and large that a filling will not stay, or if the tooth structure is weakened, a crown must be placed on the tooth to reinforce it. - Large old fillings. When large old fillings break down, or get decay around them, they usually need to be crowned. It is important to crown a tooth that has been structurally weakened to prevent a cracked or broken tooth. Once a tooth breaks, it may not be possible to save it. - Cracked tooth. When a tooth is cracked, a filling will not seal the crack. A crown has to be placed over the tooth to hold it together. If a crown is not placed on the tooth, the tooth will become sensitive to chewing pressure, or will eventually break. It is important to crown a cracked tooth before it breaks, because in some cases a broken tooth cannot be crowned and must be extracted. - Broken / Fractured tooth. A tooth that has broken is usually too weak to hold a filling. A crown will hold the tooth together and prevent it from breaking again. If the fracture involves the nerve, Root Canal Therapy may be required before the tooth is crowned. In some cases, a broken tooth cannot be saved and must be extracted. - Sensitive teeth. Teeth that are very sensitive, either from a lot of wear, or from receded gums, sometimes require crowns to seal and protect the teeth from hot and cold sensitivity. - Root Canal Therapy. A tooth that has undergone Root Canal Therapy will need a crown to properly seal and protect the tooth. A tooth with Root Canal Therapy is more brittle than a tooth with a healthy nerve and blood supply. A crown provides the necessary support to the tooth.

OBTAIN THE SMILE YOU ALWAYS WANTED WITH AMAZING DENTAL VENEERS! Veneers can create a smile that rivals the most famous of Hollywood stars. In fact, many of them have already had this procedure done in order to create the smiles you see on camera today. But of course, you dont have to be famous to improve your smile! We can accomplish a variety of improvements using dental veneers. By placing them on top of the teeth, we can close gaps, make teeth even in length, cover dark s...tains and create a uniform looking smile. The veneers are only about one (1) mm thick approximately the thickness of a fingernail. That same thickness is shaved off the natural tooth surface so when the veneer is bonded to the tooth, the tooth doesnt feel or look thicker. The shade of the veneer, along with its shape and size will be made to match your surrounding teeth so that it blends in perfectly. We also use dental veneers for restorations. When teeth become cracked, chipped or broken, a veneer can be used to restore the tooth to its full functionality. Call or email us today to book an appointment, so that we can give you the smile you deserve! :D
