This is a question I get asked a few times a day and the answer can be complicated if you want to go into the history of it all, but I’ll try to simplify it.. . In Ontario, both professions are regulated under the same college- the College of Chiropodists of Ontario. Both professions are the only specialized and regulated foot health professionals in Ontario. There are 600 Chiropodists and 60 Podiatrist...s practicing in Ontario! Education: Most Chiropodists hold a science specialized baccalaureate degree and a Diploma of Chiropody (D.Ch.). Podiatrists hold a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree (DPM). Scope of Practice: Both professions can provide the same general foot care, however, Chiropodists may perform soft tissue surgery, whereas Podiatrists can also perform bone surgery/order and take X-rays. Coverage: Chiropody/Podiatry services are usually covered under most third party health insurance plans. A portion of Podiatry services may be covered under OHIP.
