Fireside Design Build 26.05.2021

The steep pitch of the vaulted ceiling in this Wildwood kitchen allowed us to integrate this Michael Anastassiades pendant light installation with the architecture. We designed this kitchen to be able to capture sunlight on three sides for morning, afternoon, and evening light. When we design a new home we always want to consider natural lighting when laying out the rooms as they relate to the building lot.... #kitchendesign #winnipegartist #mywinnipeg #wpgnow #tourismwinnipeg #exploremanitoba #ywg #kitchengoals #beerstagram #elledecor #remodelista #sodomino #lonnyliving #designbuild #interiors #interiordesign #howyouhome #terrazzo

When you find a sunny spot with a nice view.... own it. We added this beautiful new wood window to capture the afternoon sunlight, and created a custom counter-height table with comfy leather stools. The soft pink walls complement the green-grey cabinetry and contrast the rich dark wood that we stain-colour-matched the rest of the old trim. ... Another fun detail: try to spot the integrated outlet for phone chargers. We often get asked if we do decor as well as design. The answer is... it depends. We do now handle decor (furniture, art, rugs, drapery, etc) when it is part of a larger renovation or new home project, but not decor in isolation. This project is in a newer space that was a modern white/concrete box with good light but zero warmth. We renovated the kitchen/living room and sought out pieces that would add texture and coziness. Typically, when everything is brand new in a spac...e, it can feel sterile and too heavy on the generic showhome vibes. Antiques don’t always mean ornate, if that’s not your thing. Many people aren’t aware that antiques can be modern or traditional. Even if they are from the 70’s or 80’s (that’s not old, right?) they can do a lot to add a sense of history to the space. We work closely with local dealers to source the right pieces for the right space and the right homeowner. Just like with art, it makes a space unique, interesting, and highly personal. Shout out to @shoestringpicker and @kalbarteski for allowing us to add their creative talents to this home.

Throwback to a warm October weekend in the midst of the forest and the pandemic. We designed this timber frame cedar outdoor kitchen with many of the same principles we design all kitchens: social space, intense-cooking functionality, light, views, and materials that are honest and appropriate. We wanted the floor to be level with the ground, so we dug down to make a timber grade beam and could then inlay reclaimed bricks. The bricks are sourced locally, and they are total...ly porous. They absorb the forest floor around and look perfectly at home in their surroundings. If it’s a wet season, they are damp and slightly mossy, if it’s dry and hot they absorb the heat and feel cool underfoot. The old wood windows were salvaged from a nearby 100-year old cabin, (PVC just wouldn’t feel right, and you don’t need double pane in summer anyway). Making a kitchen functional meant making it bear safe, so the discreetly-installed rolling door and window can easily be closed and opened every day. We also sourced some beautiful granite pieces from @italstonedesign to clad the outdoor portions of the counter, which fits perfectly here at Victoria Beach, the strange land of soft sand and giant boulders.

Why design-build? That bulkhead and hole in the ceiling are not arbitrary. There are so many technical details that need to be considered when designing a space. A strong construction knowledge allows the design to be pushed further while remaining grounded in reality. In the same way, being invested in the design pushes us to achieve the highest level of craftsmanship.... We handle the job from concept to completion. It takes a lot of stress off our clients this way.

Swipe for the before shot of the same view! We moved the kitchen into the old dining room and removed walls, allowing for a huge 9’ patio door to the back yard. Midcentury modern homes like this one often have open concept plans, and we wanted to increase the openness, while still making specific rooms ...instead of the oversized generic mega-room that plagues so many large new homes. It’s like, sure we can take the walls down... but now what? Nobody feels comfortable in an ...aircraft hangar, no matter how many velvet sectional couches you have. For one example (of many), this custom ash slatted wall creates some division between living room and kitchen, while still letting light through. . . . . #winnipegrenovation #beforeandafterrenovation #ywg #kitchengoals #wpgnow #howyouhome #howihaven #designbuild #remodelista #winnipegartist #avonite #winnipeghomes #winnipegsmallbusiness #winnipeglocal #winnipegphotography #tuxedowinnipeg #charleswoodwinnipeg #westernliving #mywinnipeg #wpgeats #thisoldhouse #midcenturymodern #midcenturykitchen #winnipegrealtor #exploremanitoba #kitchendesign See more

Swipe for the before! This character home had original oak panelling in the adjacent dining room, and since we respectfully opened up the kitchen to connect to the dining room, it was extra important to make the kitchen speak to that craftsmanship. New wood windows and wall panels, (and base cabinets to match!) helps so much with the flow of the house. We also love how the west facing window brings in sunlight around happy hour (and there’s a great view down a lovely forested... street) so it was essential to design a kitchen table with comfy stools. The floor is our own custom design with 3 types of natural stone and solid brass inlay. And it’s heated, because winter. . . . . #winnipegrenovation #beforeandafterrenovation #ywg #wpgnow #kitchengoals #designbuild #howyouhome #howihaven #kitchenenvy #remodelista #devolkitchens #devol #bespokekitchen #marble #carraramarble #winnipeghomebuilder #westernliving #lonnyliving #tourismwinnipeg #exploremanitoba #mywinnipeg #wolseleywinnipeg #inmydomaine #marblebacksplash #winnipegrealestate #winnipegrealtor #thisoldhouse #characterhome #kitchendesign #ihavethisthingwithfloors See more

Our custom leather sectional-meets-window-seat is key to making this small space livable and comfortable. Two people can lounge with their feet up on the sectional, another couple can perch on the window seat portion, and another on the Eames lounger (the only thing that was existing in the space before we started the project). We also managed to fit drawer storage into the base of the sectional. See previous post for another view of this space! . A subdued but highly textured material palette creates a sense of calm in this downtown project. Our two wood tones were taken from the existing flooring (maple) and ceiling beams (douglas fir). Flooring and beams is pretty much all we kept in this space and we added more wood to the ceiling between the beams. We are always inspired by the Japanese ideal of wabi sabi, which celebrates the imperfections found in nature. Natural materials like leather, soapstone, and copper,... as well as hand-applied finishes keep this industrial space intimate rather than sterile. Even the art was specifically chosen as part of this space. (The watercolour piece is made with natural hand-made inks by @mariaeppart and the ceramic vase is by @teeganwalker.ceramics ). The pendant lights are made of copper and stone by our favourite lighting designer @studiodavidpompa . For the small kitchen to be minimal but functional, we found a place for everything. The fridge and pantry are hidden behind copper leaf panels, and an extra-deep wall cabinet with appliance garage fill one wall of the kitchen. The custom island has an integrated cutlery drawer but also serves as the dining table for 4-6 people. Check out our profile for the story highlight to see more of this space! See more

In our research for @juneberry we learned a lot- first that a juneberry is more locally known as a saskatoon. (Probably because they are nowhere near ripe in June ‘round here) and that we have so many different indigenous berries and some crazy looking edible mushrooms on which we based our colour and material palette. . Different berries in various degrees of ripeness inspired our custom metal mobiles kinetic sculptures that are constantly and gently in motion. Huge hit w...ith babies. Hand-woven booths in hemp (another local product) were heroically made by the cafe owners and friends, .....cause sometimes we design things that none of our tradespeople will touch. Local dream-team @synonymartconsultation commissioned talented home-grown artists @hannaclare (shown) @mariaeppart to create special pieces for the cafe. . Even the muddy clay soil along our rivers makes an appearance, inspiring our softly rounded half-height divider walls. Check our Juneberry highlight reel to see pics of those and how they divided the small space into cozy seating zones.... Cause we’ve all had the annoying experience of being seated at a tiny cafe table that feels like it’s in a busy aisle. No bad seats allowed! . . . #savembrestaurants #gowpg #mywinnipeg #wpgeats #ywg #exploremanitoba #tourismwinnipeg #winnipegartist #designbuild #canada #cafelife #explorecanada #beerstagram #cocktailbar #brunchtime #restaurantdesign #hemp #onlyinthepeg #pegcity #pegcitygrub
