Careless Whisper - George Michael Tribute (Add me on Instagram: @AcousticTrench)

So, killing a bit of time just before and just after the last Neepawa Town Council meeting of 2018 (which you can read about later on the Neepawa News page here on Facebook, or watch on NACTV tomorrow night following NACTV's Bigger Bingo), we checked out some YouTube clickbait regarding the most inappropriate characters in comic book history, and this one stood out: "He-She", whose one-&-only (thank goodness) appearance was in 1943's Boy Comics #9 (we've attached the story in full), with this tagline: "The deadliest of the species is the female! The strongest of the species is the male! Combine these with the killer instinct and you have the most cunning, the most vicious, the most fiendish killer of all time!"

So while we've spent some time talking about upcoming blockbuster theatrical major motion pictures that're based on the comic books we sell in our Lower Showroom with the toys & games & movies, we are also known for being a music store in our Upper Showroom, and for qualifying as both definitions of a "music store": - we have an impressive in-stock selection of musical instruments including guitars, bass guitars, violins, mandolins, banjos, drums, pianos, keyboards, etc., etc.... - we also maintain a wide selection of vinyl records (45s, LPs, and even 78s) and CDs We actually used to carry the toy guitar demonstrated in this video... until we realized that our lowest-priced 3/4-sized acoustic didn't cost much more, despite being a significantly-better, quality musical instrument. Regardless, we're including the video just for fun.

The future of the current Star Trek film franchise may be in jeopardy, but we still have Star Trek toys, books, DVDs, comics, etc., etc., etc., all in stock here at FlashBack (as always, if you don't see what you're looking for, just ask, because it may very well be in the back room).

Now in-between those two movies, On April 5th we'll get the chance to see the OTHER (and technically, the original) "Captain Marvel"... but not from Marvel Comics or Marvel Studios. Confused? Perhaps, some of you may think I mean "Mar-Vell", the first Marvel Comics' Captain Marvel, appearing first in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 (we have that here in the store!) in 1967... but probably not. Note that Carol Danvers first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 in 1968, later became the... superhero Ms. Marvel in the 70s, and has only had the name "Captain Marvel" since 2012... but clearly, that's not what we're talking about, either. This is about the Billy Batson/Captain Marvel character known better now as Shazam (or Shazam!), created in 1939 by artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, and debuted in Whiz! Comics #2, published by Fawcett Comics. The best-selling comic book character of the 1940s has endured numerous annoyances since that time: - copyright infringement legal hassles when DC claimed that Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman, leading to Fawcett closing its comics division and settling out of court with DC in 1953; - ironically, DC later licensed Captain Marvel from Fawcett in 1972, and even stranger, usually teamed the character up with Superman; - of course, the inevitable same-name problems related to the by-then established Marvel Comics characters Mar-Vell and Carol Danvers (and others) who were also being called Captain Marvel led Marvel Comics to send DC several cease-and-desist letters after DC began publishing "Shazam! The Original Captain Marvel", and by the end of 1973, the character became almost completely identified by the word he would shout to activate his powers. Now, if you weren't able to follow all of that, it's why the Fawcett/DC character is usually now called "Shazam" instead of "Captain Marvel". Also, just so you know, "SHAZAM!" is actually an acronym for the names of the six immortal elders who grant Captain Marvel... I mean, Shazam... his superpowers: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. Anyway... check out the trailer for the upcoming film, with Zachary Levi, the former star of NBC's "Chuck", in the lead role. Regardless of what anyone calls the character (how about "Captain Shazam"... no? Fine.), it looks like it should be a fun movie to watch.
