BC's Food Banks have adapted many of their services to meet clients' needs while following the provincial health orders. From home delivery, ticket system or outside curbside pick-up, our members have provided continuous access to food to vulnerable members of their communities. Did you know? Lining your crisper with a few sheets of paper towel helps to absorb the condensation that the veggies generate as they chill. British Columbia’s child poverty rate of 20.3% was tied for the seventh-highest child poverty rate out of Canada’s thirteen provinces and territories in 2016. In British Columbia, 1 of every 3 people who access food banks is a child.

There is no shortage of healthy food in our communities, but the challenge is finding an efficient way to distribute it That’s where the Perishable Food Recovery Program comes in! There is a lot of pressure for fruits and vegetables to look good. Retailers often have all kinds of specs on the colour, size, and shape of the produce sold in their stores... The end result, you ask? Millions of pounds of perfectly good food being nixed. Did you know? Many of our food banks grow their own fresh produce through local community gardens. Because of this, they are able to provide more healthy, nutritious items to the families and individuals who access them. Food security relies on access to sufficient nutritious, safe food. A report by the BC Centre for Disease Control published an analysis of household food insecurity in BC Using data from 2011-12, the August 2016 report found that 11.8% of British Columbia households, about half a million people, fit the description for food insecurity.
