Margo Harrison - Born in 1945 in Vancouver, Margo was raised near Ladysmith on Vancouver Island. She majored in fine arts at the University of Victoria where she studied painting with Toni Onley and earned a Bachelor of Education degree. Margo taught "Painting in the Parks" classes from 1967 to 1972 for the Federation of Canadian Artists. She was a teacher and art specialist in the Surrey School District for thirty-four years before retiring in 2002. Margo began watercolour p...ainting in 1985 and started sculpting clay "Comfort Cats" in 1998. She has been working in mixed media and acrylics since 2004. Her work has been displayed in galleries and exhibition centres throughout British Columbia. Private and corporate collections contain her work. Margo works in series, exploring an idea thoroughly before moving on. Her paintings focus on light, shadows, shapes and textures as she narrows the field of vision on subjects such as totem poles and organic shapes like butterflies, dragonflies and leaves. To provide a challenge, and a pleasing balance, she sculpts life-size figures of sleeping cats out of clay (Comfort Cats). Margo sees her futures works celebrating sunshine, uplifting sprits, calming frayed nerves and exploring different themes and media. Her paintings and sculptures have been shown at the Birthplace of BC Gallery since 1998. [email protected]

Ela Cholewa - I was born into a communist country in the 1950s and grew up in a place where the freedom to fully express who I was as a person, and what I felt about the world around me was almost non existent. Within that environment I found nature to be my refuge. I felt a sense of freedom in the silence of the sun speckled forests scattered throughout the industrial city in which I lived. When I met my husband I felt this same love of nature within him, and together, we de...cided that we wanted more of it. This feeling only grew stronger after we had our first daughter and soon we took the wild risk to immigrate as refugees to Canada-a country of wilderness, freedom, and unlimited opportunity. It was not an easy move; we left behind mothers, fathers, and siblings. For many years we became preoccupied with the business of getting settled and finding comforts for our family in our new world. In this period of hard work I lost my touch with the nature. The Camera reconnected me with the freedom and peace of nature. Once I started taking pictures I could not stop because photography allowed me to see beauty in the little and sometimes unexpected moments in life. Photography is my passion: I appreciate beauty through the lens of my camera and love to share that beauty with people around me.
