When: Aug. 31 Sept. 9 Where: Pacific Cinematheque, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, Granville 7 Cinemas, SFU Harbour Centre The best of Latin American cinema is set to grace Vancouver screens for the 10th year with a spotlight on Argentine cinema, a Queer Latin Cinema program, indigenous films and much more. The annual festival promotes a dialogue between cultures and explores historical and social issues in Latin American countries. Most films cost $10, but gala screenings and opening night films cost $15. Tickets can be purchased in advance at vlaff.org, the W2 media café (111 West Hastings Street / Aug. 22-30) and the Cinematheque (1131 Howe Street / Sept. 1-9). Built in 1911 by Captain Henry Pybus and the architect Samuel Birds, the St Clair Hotel was the first concrete building in Vancouver. The hotel originally accommodated railway and ocean-going passengers to Pacific and Atlantic locations. On my walk through Vancouver today I found this jewel.
