ONLINE WORKSHOP: POETICS & POLITICS OF STILL LIFE Dainesha Nugent-Palache, May 15, 1:00PM Join artist Dainesha Nugent-Palache in this workshop that highlights the poetics and politics of still life photography. Participants will explore the ways in which objects can be used to build and trace larger narratives such as identity and migration, while also considering how the use of satire and pastiche can be implemented to add critical layers. The workshop will culminate with a ...group discussion which considers these elements. Participants are encouraged to pre-select an object of personal significance to be used in the final portion of the session. Through her performative video works and photographs, Toronto-based artist Dainesha Nugent-Palache explores the dichotomies and paradoxes inherent in representations of Afro-Caribbean femininities. Dainesha’s artwork flirts with anthropological and archaeological realms, often produced as a result of her familial digging. Her practice is concerned with visualizations of Black diaspora across pasts, presents, and speculative futures, producing portraits and other still life-based works. With an exuberant approach to colour and display, Daineshas work often negotiates with forms of glamour, excess, and other photographic strategies inherent to the visual cultures of capitalism. Dainesha graduated from OCAD University’s photography program where she was the recipient of the Dorothy Hoover Research Award, and the OCAD University Photography Faculty and Friends Award, she is also a recipient of the 2021 National Gallery Photography Award. Her artwork has been exhibited Nationally through venues such as the AGO, Gallery TPW, TRUCK Contemporary, and internationally in New York, Finland, and Vienna, and can be found in The Wedge Collection, Toronto Dominion Bank Art Collection, as well as several private collections. Dainesha is also a founding member of the plumb. Register now to reserve a spot!

ONLINE WORKSHOP - Creative Prompts for Raw Nerve Endings Geneviève Wallen. During the first wave of COVID, a trend of capturing moments of stillness emerged on Instagram. This manifested as detailed oriented pictures such as blooming trees, peculiar storefront signs, beautiful evening skies, or contrasting textures joined on the same surface. Intriguing visual accounts of one's adventures in their immediate surroundings have filled feeds with pockets of travelling logs, sha...ring a slice of escapism. This workshop, led by curator and writer Geneviève Wallen, aims to cultivate and explore the effects provided by small wonders and simple awes. Participants will receive a list of seven playful photographic prompts to complete before the workshop. During the online workshop, participants will be invited to share their images and experiences with the other participants. Following the sharing session, participants will come together to collectively generate more prompts to support creative energies during the upcoming pandemic winter. We've launched our new website just in time for our upcoming exhibition! A Few Howls Again Silvia Kolbowski... *Main Gallery + Vitrines* October 31 - December 12, 2020 Silvia Kolbowski: A Few Howls Again presents film and photographic works by Argentine-born New York-based artist Silvia Kolbowski. Kolbowski’s research-based visual and textual practice addresses questions of temporality, historicization, political resistance, and the unconscious. In this exhibition, video, collage and installation work by the artist examine contemporary issues around political narrativization and power structures through historical figures and film history. This exhibition will create a space to nurture the multiple dialogues embedded in Kolbowski’s practice and explore its capacious ability to gesture outward to our present political moment. In collaboration with the artist, the curators have selected fragments from Kolbowski’s archive that frame both the broad and personal stakes of her work. As Kolbowski is also a prolific writer on art and politics, A Few Howls Again will extend into written word through the inclusion of selected texts. Curated by Alexandra Symons Sutcliffe, Jared Quinton and Magdalyn Asimakis. Exhibitions are open by appointment only Tuesday to Saturday 12-5PM. Maximum 5 visitors in the gallery and masks must be worn at all times. https://www.gallery44.org/exhibitions/a-few-howls-again
