The Gander Bay Fire Department would like to give a big shout out to one of their own. On Sunday, April 11th one of our firefighters, Lance Thistle, was driving on the TCH near the Lewisporte intersection when he came upon a truck that had overturned in the ditch and landed in brook. He proceeded to enter the cold, waist deep water to render assistance. He broke the window with his hands and while others helped keep their heads above water they retrieved the two individuals. The Lewisporte Fire Rescue rendered assistance when they arrived on the scene. By the time Lance returned to his vehicle he could hardly feel his feet so he proceeded to his destination in Norris Arm to get warm dry clothes. We greatly appreciate having people like Lance on our team. Thanks Lance for providing such an heroic act of kindness.

The following is a message from the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services President, Fire Chief Joe Power. About this year’s Fire Prevention W...eek. "With people staying at home more these days, this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is more relevant than ever with Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen! According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), almost half of reported fires started in the kitchen and two-third of home cooking fire start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. Which is why our Association and Fire departments throughout our Province will use the week of October 4-10 to educate our communities on cooking hazards, the dangers of unattended cooking, and precautions they can take to prevent cooking-related fires. A cooking fire can occur just as easily as it can be prevented. Getting people to recognize that there is still a home fire risk has been challenging. Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen works to remind the public that fires can and do still happen. It educates the public about the dangers posed by cooking and the simple but effective actions they can take to keep themselves, and those around them, safe in the kitchen. Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling. If you must leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. You must be alert when cooking. You will not be alert if you are sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs, or consumed alcohol that makes you drowsy. Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you are cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool. Have a kid-free zone of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. A cooking fire can occur just as easily as it can be prevented. Simple actions like setting a timer, keeping your cooking areas clear, and staying focused on the food makes a compounding difference to keep you and those around you safe. No doubt these are challenging times with no easy answers, but our work to help advocate for and implement fire and life safety in our communities is even more crucial than ever before. Less fires means less burden on our first responders. The work we do for Fire Prevention Week is important to the security and well-being of communities everywhere. Therefore, it is incumbent on all of us to recognize and take full advantage of the campaign not just in October, but all year long. With the Covid19 pandemic ongoing we will have to develop new ways of spreading our messages, so together by sharing campaign-related resources and information we can help inspire individuals and families to become their own advocates and embrace their personal role in our safety system. I encourage all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to educate themselves on the steps they can take to protect themselves and their families. Fires caused by cooking and heating can be devastating but ensuring smoke alarms are in working order and home fire escape plans are in place could mean the difference between life and death. As the rest of our nation and the world reel with the COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of first responders are a huge focus not only for the first responders and their families but also for the community in which they serve; so we are asking all residents of our Province to please follow all the guidelines and recommendations that are set forward by our Chief Medical Officer of Health. Fire Chief Joe Power President, Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services"

The weather is turning colder, & if you have a wood burning appliance for heating, chances are you’ve started to use it for warmth. Have you cleaned your chimney yet? If not, please make sure you do to prevent a chimney fire at your home!

We want to commend our firettes for the awesome job they all did in organizing the food delivery and distribution and the community for the donation of food during our most recent Search and Rescue incident. There are too many to list and thank individually so I’ll list items prepared and donated. There pop, water, Tim’s coffee, tea, sweets, pizza, chilli, soups, sandwiches, fisherman’s brews, etc to feed our search crew of nearly 50 people. There was several donations of ...gas, local boats and other watercraft joined us in the search which was greatly appreciated. Members of neighbouring fire departments came by and offered help during the weekend. We are grateful for the help of the RCMP NL Dive team, local RCMP detachment, Bonavista Bay Ground Search & Rescue, CCG, 9 wing Gander, Deer Lake Search & Rescue that came to assist our Fire Department in this Search & Rescue effort. As hard and difficult as it is, we were very pleased to successfully recover the body of the young man late this afternoon after searching since mid afternoon on Saturday. We are very thankful for the help that local eyewitnesses provided, in pin pointing the location they last saw the young man. This truly was a full community effort. Our most sincere condolences goes out to the family of the young man. To our community members and members of our surrounding communities that helped we say thank you very, very much.
