#PeopleOfGeorgian: Meet Alison Kossowski When I made the commitment to co-author a textbook, it was a pre-COVID-19 world. I thought, Oh, that’s no problem. I...’ll be able to balance my teaching and personal responsibilities at home, and I’ll have a day or two during the week that I can just commit to writing the textbook. And then basically COVID-19 happened. I was teaching from home online and juggling other responsibilities. So basically, this book got written in the wee hours of the morning in between teaching at Georgian and everything else. But I’m quite pleased with it. At some point COVID-19 will be a distant memory, and I will be able to remember this positive outcome. It’s a positive, tangible thing that came out of what was a challenging time for a lot of people. It’s nice to have a physical copy of the textbook in my hands as a solid reminder of all that went into it. The book, Foundations of Criminal and Civil Law in Canada, Fifth Edition, is a new edition of an existing textbook. It’s a general introductory law textbook that’s aimed at students in policing and community services programs. It was a really exciting project to be a part of. It touches on so many different areas of laws topics everyone should have a little bit of background on because they’re things that really shape your life. For instance, most people have a cellphone contract or real-estate contract. We were really able to pull from the news headlines really interesting examples of relevant cases, situations and protests, things that would be interesting to police students. It’s extremely up to date. I had a whole other career before I became a lawyer. I’m a scientist by training and have a PhD in molecular genetics. I was a cancer researcher at the University of Toronto. I’m a dedicated lifetime learner, and I like finding out about new things. While I really enjoyed my scientific career, I found science was a bit of a lonely career. You’re at the bench working with test tubes and your experiments, and you’re toiling away fairly individually, even if you’re working as part of a research team. I wanted to work more with people. After law school, I also did my Master’s in Education, so I’m actually a licensed secondary school biology teacher. Ultimately, my career led me to teaching at Georgian. You never know where your path is going to go. Alison Kossowski, lawyer and professor in Georgian’s Business and Management programs. Alison co-authored her first textbook, Foundations of Criminal and Civil Law in Canada, Fifth Edition, which was published in March 2021.

#PeopleOfGeorgian: Meet Wazeer Rahiman My dad always wanted me to be a police officer. When I was a kid back home in India, he would only let me watch police m...ovies, and he would watch them with me. He was in the military for 10 years so that kind of influenced it a bit. So, I always had a passion for policing, but I never tried to pursue it as a career. When I first came to Canada in 2012, I took a business management course but afterward I thought, this is not what I want to do. I wanted to do something I really enjoyed. That’s when I decided to go into policing. I didn’t know if I would make it because I had no background in it, and I had zero knowledge about policing in Canada and very little knowledge about the legal system here. It was all brand new for me, but luckily, I joined Georgian. The professors at Georgian’s Orillia Campus are amazing. You can be passionate about a program but in order to complete it you need help from the professors, instructors, trainers and I had that at Georgian. Our fitness instructor was tough, but it was always to make us better. When I first started running, it was hard for me to run for 10 minutes. Every day we’d have to run for an extra minute longer until we were able to run for a full hour straight. I never thought I’d be able to run that far, but I did it. You don’t know if you can do something until you try. I’m so glad I went to Georgian. Without it, I don’t think I would be where I am today. And my dad? He was in tears when I told him I got hired as a police officer. He never thought there would be a time I would be telling him I actually did it like he wanted to. It makes both of us happy. Const. Wazeer Rahiman, alumnus from Georgian’s Police Foundations program (Class of 2018) and police officer with South Simcoe Police Wazeer was also an ambassador in Georgian’s MORE campaign, sharing his experience as an international student and introvert pursuing his dreams. #PeopleOfGeorgian: Meet Nadia George My father used to tell me stories about how his uncle got picked on very badly in school because he was Indian. Both of my ...great grandparents come from Indigenous Nations, and it was just something that they didn’t talk about. They wanted their children to have, what was considered back then, a normal life, and being Indian was not something you wanted to be. My father never grew up being able to celebrate his culture; it was very hidden. So, growing up, I didn’t get to learn about my Indigenous roots. Eventually I wondered, How much of my Indigenity am I allowed to own? That was a mindset for me that I had to get over. No one has to give me permission. But as an actress, seeing Indigenous people portrayed from only one perspective was really disheartening. As I started to learn more about my culture and our teachings and how we are as people, and compare that to what I was seeing on the screen, I was confused. Hollywood movies always portrayed us being in touch with nature and dressed in regalia, like we’re these mythical creatures. But there isn’t one grouping of Indigenous people. We all have our own cultures, our own ways, and, just like everyone else in this world, we all look different. Now, there’s a huge push for Indigenous people to start becoming film directors, getting behind the camera, and writing our stories. We’re starting to see a better truth and reflection of who we are as people our journeys, our stories and our struggles. I want youth to know they have a right to their stories and to their voices. If we can empower them at a younger age, who knows what their stories will hold for them. Nadia George, Georgian alumna, award-winning Mi’kmaq-Canadian actor, public speaker, and Indigenous rights and youth advocate. She won a Distinguished Alumni Award at Georgian’s 2020 Board of Governor’s Awards of Distinction. Want to share your story? Email [email protected].
