Progressive Industrial Construction Certifications 14.11.2020

I’ve wanted to go into construction since high school. I used to help my dad out all the time. Everything in our house we built ourselves. But my teachers t...ried to steer me down a different path. They’d encourage me to ‘figure things out.’ They’d say: ‘Why don’t you do this?’ or ‘Why don’t you do that?’ But I chose construction because it’s what I like to do. I got my union card at eighteen. The pay isn’t bad. I get benefits. It feels good to be young and working every day. But I see all these advertisements on the subway, and they basically say: ‘If you want to be successful, you have to go to college.’ All my friends went to college. Some of them have liberal arts degrees that I didn’t even know existed. A couple more dropped out. The ones who graduated can’t find jobs and have a lot of student debt. But they still look at me like I’m on the wrong path. When I tell them I can help them get a job in construction, they always say the same thing: ‘Why would we want to do that?’ See more

March 2018 - New Boots Spotlight This month, we are featuring Meagan Wood. Meagan is a Journeyperson Steamfitter-Pipefitter and a member of UA Local 213. Her ...current role is Construction Field Coordinator with Jacobs at the Irving Oil Refinery in Saint John, NB, where she has been for the past 12 years. Meagan started her career in the more traditional role of studying office administration before deciding to pursue a skilled trade. She discovered that Pipefitting allowed her to work with her hands, problem solve and to learn continuously which keeps the work interesting! Like many other women working in construction, she has experienced some negative situations and her skills were often underestimated by some colleagues. She was determined to succeed and took every chance she got to work on the tools and be involved directly. Soon enough, people around her acknowledged her capabilities and welcomed her participation. Meagan more than persevered, she thrived and her career progression has proven it was the right career decision. Meagan has moved smoothly from apprentice to journeyperson to foreman (the first female P/F Foreman at the Irving Oil Refinery), and now a Construction Coordinator. During her apprenticeship, Meagan was provided with wise words from one of her mentors that she has shared with other female apprentices you are what you accept. She believes the key to success is, find a medium between being confident but always be open to learning more, and the more you take in the better because knowledge is power. Meagan is a hardworking, positive and dedicated individual, and a great role model for any women looking to enter a skilled trade. Originally from St. Martins NB, she now lives in Rowley with her spouse who is a Steamfitter-Pipefitter, Welder and QC Inspector. When Meagan isn’t working, she enjoys riding her Harley, 4-wheeling, or enjoying bonfires and other outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.
