Girl Guides of Canada, Alberta Council 19.05.2021

Alberta Council Archive Throwback Thursday! Full and Associate members of WAGGGS meet every three years at a World Conference. During these events Member Organizations elect new World Board Members, decide the host of the next World Conference, and consider proposed constitutional and other motions. Member Organizations are represented by delegates and observers, and are strongly encouraged to ensure that young women are included in their delegations. Perhaps of most interest... is that it is at these events that countries apply to become full or associate members. Unfortunately, there are also occasions when membership is terminated. The first conference was held in Oxford, United Kingdom in 1920. Canada acted as hosts in 1972 in Toronto and in Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 1996. However, this year the 37th Conference will take place online from July 27th to July 31st, having been postponed from last year. In conjunction with the Wolfville conference Canada held a camp in Blomidon Provincial Park. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #GirlGuidesofCanada #GGCAlbertaCouncil #WAGGGS #GuidingArchives #GirlGuides #Sisterhood #WorldConference #NovaScotia #Wolfville #BlomindonProvincialPark #ServiceProject

Alberta Council Archive Throwback Thursday! Ethel Wilson was a Minister without Portfolio in the Social Credit Government of Ernest Manning and an active promoter of the rights of girls and women. She approached Girl Guides around 1970 with the suggestion that the organization should organize a model parliament for girls. At that time, the only Alberta youth parliament was a boys-only event. Mary Beatty, who was Provincial Commissioner, greeted the idea with enthusiasm and th...e event was proclaimed in 1971, with the first Alberta Girls' Parliament (AGP) taking place in 1972. It has run continuously since then, though it was postponed last year. The 49th session has just taken place online, something I am sure Ethel and Mary never envisaged. #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #GirlGuidesofCanada #GGCAlbertaCouncil #GuidingArchives #AGP #AGPHistory #AlbertaGirlsParliament #Commonwealth #Debating #Rangers #JuniorLeaders #JuniorForestWardens #4H #CanadianGirlsInTraining #CGIT #LieutenantGovernor
