Positive self-esteem is important but what about self-acceptance? What is the difference between the two and how do we achieve both? The short version: self-esteem is a measure of how we think we compare to others, while self-acceptance is timeless in terms of showing ourselves compassion, no matter how circumstances change. Self-esteem can have a big impact on our lives, as it is a lens through which we interpret our external world. We’ll often judge ourselves on how... we compare to those around us through areas such as wealth, intelligence, creativity, appearance, morals, ethics and more. Having healthy self-esteem means you think you’re on par with those around you, or how you're set apart from them in positive ways. Negative self-esteem will have our brains seeking out evidence of a confirmed bias our inner narrative created. Self-acceptance on the other hand, falls into the ranks similar to the concept of mindfulness. We can’t control the outside world, but we can gain peace by accepting ourselves and what is revolving around us. It is a willingness to fully embrace and understand our situations and is a necessary step for building a solid relationship with ourselves.
