On Saturday, GADSAR was honoured to accept an extremely generous donation from the amazing family and friends of Shane Shroeder. For 5+ years, this group of fundraisers and supporters have raised thousands of dollars for our organization in the memory of Shane. We're humbled and honoured by the donation and are proud to have you all as friends. Thank you so much to the Shane Schroeder Memorial for your contribution and partnership. #shred4shane

On June 5th, GADSAR was tasked to respond to a mountain bike crash on the Hymenoptera trail near Cedar Lake. The patient had lost consciousness right after crashing off a wood feature. BCAS arrived on scene to assess the patient, but needed assistance transporting the patient back to the Cedar Lake access road. Four SAR techs gloved/masked up, and transported the patient down an adjacent trail to the waiting ambulance. Another GADSAR member was in the area and transported the patient's bike down to town. @bcsarassoc

PUBLIC SAFETY LONG WEEKEND *Reduce search and rescue incidents* The May long weekend is the (unofficial) ‘kick off to summer’ for BC and we know you’re ...ready for it! As we transition to the next phase of our new normal, lets find a new normal outdoors; - Make a difference; "know before you go" - Be prepared for emergencies. - Make smart (AdventureSmart) choices. Exploring BC locally offers everyone easy access to trails and parks, that easy access often gives outdoor enthusiasts a false sense of security. Don’t be fooled, easy access doesn’t always mean easy terrain, easy routes or easy adventures. Your trip safety can mean the difference between a successful outcome and becoming a statistic. File a trip plan before your local adventures this weekend. https://www.adventuresmart.ca/tripplanning/tripplan.htm #bcadventuresmart #explorebclocal #reduceincidents Media release: https://www.bcsara.com/2020/05/victoria-day-long-weekend/

Weekend Public Safety Announcement British Columbia has, unfortunately, recorded a 35% increase in search and rescue incidents versus this time last year.... Weekends, like this one, with warmer weather and sunny skies are opportunities to recreate, incidentally mishaps occur that can be prevented. Heading outdoors this weekend? BE KIND be kind to other communities and recreate in your own community. (this helps SAR as well). BE CALM be calm on the trails, create space for other users. BE SAFE be safe by being prepared for your activities, recreate locally, wear PPE and choose low risk activities. BE ADVENTURESMART! #reduceincidents #explorebclater https://www.bcsara.com/2020/05/reducing-sar-incidents/

On March 16, GADSAR was tasked to respond to a knee injury on the Granite Glacier above the Fairy Meadow Hut. Two SAR techs flew out with @alpinehelicopters , and were able to land right at the incident scene due to favorable conditions. The guide had dug in a heli-pad, making it easy to land and load the patient into the machine. After an initial assessment, they flew back to the airport in Golden. @bcsarassoc

Public Safety Announcement This long weekend will be celebrated uniquely. As we celebrate simply, on our local regional trails and in our accessible municipal... parks, we encourage treading lightly, taking special caution and choose low risk, local activities. (+ #stayhome) Our provincial search & rescue incidents are down 50% from this time last year, lets keep that trend going! Together, our investment in 'safety' will make a difference. #bcadventuresmart #explorebclater #stayhome BC AdventureSmart Public Safety Announcement > https://www.bcsara.com//04/easter-long-weekend-public-saf/ British Columbia Search and Rescue Association full press release here > https://www.bcsara.com/category/update/

On March 12, GADSAR was tasked to a knee injury below the Battle Abbey Lodge in the Selkirk Mountains. The patient had sustained a knee injury while skiing and was not able to bear weight enough to skin back up to the lodge. Two SAR techs flew in with @alpinehelicopters and assessed the scene. They then landed at the lodge heli-pad to reconfigure, then performed a short sling rescue to bring the patient back to the lodge - and eventually back to the airport in town. @bcsarassoc

Hey all. Please see below for a note from Area Manager Mike Rubenstein: "Please note that we are currently closed. In the interest of public safety, there is ...no public access on the resort; no uphill foot, ski or vehicle traffic is permitted. This policy is intended for the safety of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (KHMR) employees and the public. In the Province of British Columbia, the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources Operations authorizes KHMR to operate on crown land through a Controlled Recreation Area License (CRA). This license obligates the holder to control, prohibit and direct the movement and activities of persons and vehicles within the CRA. It also enables trespass action against persons who are in non-compliance. Please respect this closure for everyone's safety. If you are caught on resort you will not be welcome to ski here next winter and trespass action will be taken against you. Thank you to those have been compliant and thank you for your understanding." We hope you and yours are staying safe and healthy : Best Impressions

Earlier this month, St Pauls Thrift Shop held a fundraiser for GADSAR, raising over 1500 dollars. This was an incredible example of a local small business supporting the community, something we see frequently here in Golden. With the proceeds from this fundraiser, GADSAR was able to purchase a new AED (Automated External Defibrillator), to replace one of our older devices. Thanks St.Paul's Thrift Shop - Behind Abbeyfield, and thanks Town of Golden - we're extremely grateful for the support!

On March 6th, GADSAR was tasked to 2 separate snowmachine related calls. The first call was up Lang Creek, where a rider had a potential hip dislocation. The patient came over a windlip and crashed into his handlebars upon landing. Two SAR techs flew in with @alpinehelicopters , immobilized the patient, and flew back the Golden airport to transfer care to BCAS. From the airport, the team loaded back up and flew towards Quartz Creek to respond to an avalanche in the area. This... report initially came in as an e-mail to the general information address on GADSAR's website. Team members were able to talk face-to-face to the party on scene, and learned that the rider had lost control of his sled, and the machine 'ghost-rode' down the slope, triggering the avalanche. Thankfully nobody was involved. A few good reminders came out of this second call. First, the best way to trigger a SAR response is to call 911 or activate the SOS feature on your satellite communication device. E-mails may not be seen for hours or even days later. Secondly, even if nobody is involved - having the reporting party on scene was extremely helpful to our team to figure out what exactly happened. Good communication can be difficult in the mountains, we’ll take all the help we can! @bcsarassoc

On February 26, GADSAR was tasked to respond to Chatter Creek for a guest with chest pain. Two SAR techs flew in with @alpinehelicopters , where they met another GADSAR member who was already up at the lodge for a guiding practicum. Oxygen was administered and vitals were monitored on the journey back to Golden, where the patient was transferred to the care of BCAS. @bcsarassoc

On February 15th, GADSAR was tasked to respond to Hope Creek for an injured sledder. The patient had gone off a drop, bounced off his seat, and was complaining of back/abdomen pain along with difficulty breathing. He tried to sled out but was unable due to pain. Two SAR techs flew in with @alpinehelicopters , stabilized the patient and transported him to the helicopter. He was then flown back to Golden and transferred to BCAS. @bcsarassoc

On February 10th, GADSAR was tasked to respond to a suspected head injury at Chatter Creek. A guest had skied into a tree, and had a potential concussion. Two SAR techs flew in with @alpinehelicopters , loaded the patient, and transferred care to BCAS. @bcsarassoc

On Feb 7th-8th, GADSAR was tasked to a mutual aid call near Chetwynd, BC to assist North Peace Search & Rescue. A snowmobiler was reported missing on Feb 2nd, and is believed to be buried in an avalanche in the area between Mount Hunter and Milburn Peak, in the Murray mountain range SW of Chetwynd. It's believed the snowmobiler was not wearing an avalanche transceiver, so a dog team and 2 SAR techs from GADSAR were called in to help in the recovery effort. Explosives were needed to secure the area to allow for searchers to enter the debris. Unfortunately, the man has not yet been found, and the search has since been suspended. Our deepest sympathies to everyone involved. @bcsarassoc @avalanchedogs
