Grace Lore BC NDP Victoria-Beacon Hill

As your next Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA, my top priority will be to work toward speeding up affordable and supportive housing initiatives. For this to be successful, all three levels of government will need to roll up their sleeves and work together. As a mom who lives in this community, I know the effects the shortage of housing and the need for more community, mental health, and addiction support are having on neighbours and communities. I think we can all agree that the cur...rent situation in parks is not the answer to homelessness in our community - it is not working for neighbours and it is not providing the care or housing those sheltering in parks need. The issue is not new, but COVID and the approaching colder months has put a magnifying glass to the challenge and elevated the urgency. The province’s role is to work with the federal and municipal governments to put affordable and supportive housing in place. John Horgan’s government has made recent and significant investments for supportive housing on Meares and Yates street, as well as the Caledonia project. When these projects come online, it will take some immediate pressure off, but this is just the start. I know we need to do more, and we can’t afford to go back to the massive neglect in housing over the last decade and a half that got us to this point. I’m ready to work hard with John Horgan to continue with our investments in this community and get people out of tents and into supportive and affordable homes. We will have to work collaboratively with the municipality to identify space and to build housing and with VIHA and BC Housing to ensure staffing and wrap around supports are put in place. See more

We need to keep doing the real work - on childcare, on affordable and supportive housing, on the programs and services people need, on harm-reduction and recovery options, and on a greener, more equitable recovery.

Today Rob Fleming and I had the honour of meeting with Mr. Frank Coniber a teacher and Indigenous academic support adviser at Victoria Highschool. I’m heartened that due to the BC NDP government we have a new K-12 curriculum that ensures all children learn about Indigenous history and cultures because #everychildmatters

Grace Lore has been nominated as our candidate for Victoria-Beacon Hill! Grace Lore is a mother of two, and a proud member of the Victoria-Beacon Hill community.... Grace teaches at the University of Victoria and is a community organizer, anti-violence advocate, and researcher. Community means everything to Grace. She sits on the Fernwood, North Park, and Quadra Village neighbourhood planning group, is a volunteer at the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, a member of a national advisory panel for Canadian Women’s Foundation, and an Affordable Fernwood organizer. At UVic, Grace teaches Canadian politics, gender and politics, and research methods. Her current research includes social media harassment and online violence. Congratulations Grace! I am so excited and so honoured to be the next NDP candidate in Victoria-Beacon Hill! This riding has been represented by the amazing Carole James for 15 years and I am committed to doing the hard work, heart-forward, that this community deserves.
