Our Earth Day Sale of Trees and Shrubs will help our migrating birds raise their fledglings! Carolinian natives are needed to support these populations. Our advice from the Carolinian Canada Experts: LEAVE THE LEAVES! With the snow all melted and green shoots starting to poke up from the soil, it can be really tempting to clear away the dead leaves and stems from last year’s growing season to see what else is happening and tidy the garden. In fact, it’s best to leave the leaves and standing dead plant material, as they have provided valuable habitat for overwintering insects; by clearing the dead matter before they move out..., you might inadvertently harm pollinators and other invertebrates. If you feel the need to do a bit of tidying, wait until late spring, but it’s really not necessary.
