Our Earth Day Sale of Trees and Shrubs will help our migrating birds raise their fledglings! Carolinian natives are needed to support these populations. Here's my favourite - Cercis Canadensis Redbud! Beautiful Spring bloom, heat shaped leaves, and gorgeous yellow Autumn colour. This is a perfect front garden tree for a smallish hard - about 15 - 20 feet at maturity. And if you have the room, consider our native Oak - it is considered a Supertree - supporting the most numbe...r of species! Order your trees online - it's all safe. Our advice from the Carolinian Canada Experts: LEAVE THE LEAVES! With the snow all melted and green shoots starting to poke up from the soil, it can be really tempting to clear away the dead leaves and stems from last year’s growing season to see what else is happening and tidy the garden. In fact, it’s best to leave the leaves and standing dead plant material, as they have provided valuable habitat for overwintering insects; by clearing the dead matter before they move out..., you might inadvertently harm pollinators and other invertebrates. If you feel the need to do a bit of tidying, wait until late spring, but it’s really not necessary. If you think about it, no one clears the leaves in the woods and the spring ephemerals always come back! You can subscribe to Carolinian Canada to find out more at inthezonegardens.ca. And you can add Carolinian trees and shrubs to the garden through our Earth Day Sale!

Time to start your research! While most tree farmers recommend waiting a bit longer to bring your fresh tree home, it’s a good time to plan!

Day 7 of our Christmas Gift Guide! Our gift recommendation today is from our Treasurer, Joe Fisher, who just loves a green Christmas! Composting is easy, great for the environment, and an amazing option for gardeners of all skill levels. With these brackets from Lee Valley tools, your gardener can start right away! ... From the website: These heavy-duty brackets allow you to make a composter that fits the space you have available, providing 48 cu.ft. of capacity at its largest configuration. It is based on one of the original designs by Sir Albert Howard, a founder of organic gardening, with the boards angled and spaced to provide good air circulation and moisture to promote decomposition. Easy to assemble, the set includes four powder-coated steel brackets that hold a total of twenty 1" 6" wooden boards (that you supply). Screws included. Shop early and shop local! #shoplocalgrimsby #leevalleytools #compost
