The City of Charlottetown Emergency Measures team would like to remind the public of the importance of having a five-day emergency preparedness plan. Emergencie...s can happen at any time, and citizens should be ready to care for themselves and their family for up to five days. The Canadian Hurricane Centre is currently tracking and closely monitoring Hurricane Teddy and predicts the Island could see impacts as a post-tropical storm next Tuesday/Wednesday. Last year around this time, Prince Edward Island felt the impacts of post-tropical storm Dorian. Preparedness in the middle of a global pandemic looks a little different, said Fire Chief Randy MacDonald, Chair of the City’s Emergency Measures team. Normally, the recommendation is emergency preparedness for up to 72 hours, but because of the pandemic we join our provincial counterparts in strongly urging the public to upgrade their emergency preparedness kit to include items such as masks and hand sanitizer, and ensure they have supplies to take care of their household for up to five days. Regardless of whether the storm hits hard next week, it’s important the public is prepared for emergencies year-round, such as hurricanes, flooding, or other events that could cut off electricity or other utilities. It is also good to be prepared for potential delays in emergency response or access to supplies. The public is encouraged to prepare a five-day emergency kit and share the location of the kit with everyone in their home or business. Include items such as: a supply of water for between three and seven days; non-perishable food; a stocked First Aid kit; prescription and non-prescription medicines; formula, diapers and other baby supplies, if needed; a manual can opener; toiletries; battery-powered radios and flashlights with extra batteries; blankets and a change of clothing for each household member (in case of evacuation); candles and matches or a lighter; cash; masks and hand sanitizer; and, a charged cell phone. Citizens are responsible for ensuring they are able to receive updates from emergency personnel, Utility crews, and the municipality in an emergency. To ensure you are still able to receive updates during this time, have a device that can receive updates without an electricity source, such as a battery or hand crank powered radio. Citizens are encouraged to sign-up for emergency alerts through the free Charlottetown Alert System. The public can choose to receive emergency alerts via SMS (text message), email or by phone. Sign up by visiting: www.charlottetown.ca and clicking on ‘Alert System’ under the Resident Services section. (Direct link: https://member.everbridge.net/index/892807736726276#/signup). If sign-up assistance or help accessing an existing account is required, please contact 902-629-4000, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday Friday. The City’s Public Works Department is prepping for the potential storm next week and asks that anyone who notices clogged catch basins contact the department at 902-894-5208 (902-629-6916 after business hours) so that it can be addressed in advance of the rain. For emergency contacts and departmental contacts (during and after business hours), visit: https://www.charlottetown.ca/contact_us The public is also encouraged to secure anything that can blow around. Lawn chairs, barbeques, toys, construction material, and other debris can be damaged and/or become dangerous projectiles in high winds. For those living in Orchard Hill area, please check your vehicles, let Police know if anything is missing. Make sure cars and sheds are locked. While I have full faith in our police department, the watchful eye of our residents is crucial. If you see anything suspicious, do not hesitate to contact the local Police. Stay safe everyone, Greg... CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. A 16-year-old Rocky Point resident faces theft charges after police responded to a complaint of male checking cars in Charlottetown Thursday morning. At about 1:15 a.m. on April 16, Charlottetown police responded to the complaint on Wallace Drive and several officers searched the area. The suspect was located in a yard on Cortland Street at 2:40 a.m. and was arrested. The youth is in custody and is facing several theft from vehicle and trespass at night charges. The youth had several items in his possession which are believed to have been stolen. Police are asking residents that live in the area of Cortland Street, Wallace Drive, Russet Drive and Scott Street to check their vehicles to see if anything was stolen overnight and if so, call Charlottetown Police Services at 902-629-4172 to report the thefts.

As the snow melts, lawn damage due to snow plows is exposed. I have received a number of calls from residents inquiring about spring clean up and repair. Under normal circumstances, Public Works crew would be out cleaning up loose pieces of asphalt and large sods but with the uncertainty we continue to face with Covid-19, we are operating with a skeleton crew and only responding to emergencies. With the weather getting warmer, most like myself, are anxious to get out and ...start yard work and seeing damage is frustrating. For the residents of Ward 7 or Charlottetown for that matter, as frustrated as you may be, please remain patient. When Covid-19 is a thing of the past, our crews will be out in full force making Charlottetown as beautiful as we know it is. Lastly, if anyone in my Ward (7) requires assistance (picking up groceries or prescriptions and delivering) please reach out to me and I’ll be more than happy to help. Email - [email protected] Cell - 902-388-7031 Stay safe and thank you again for your patience. Greg
