It’ll be interesting to see how the fishing is on Gullrock after a year of rest. These pictures give a lot of hope for what’s to come. (30 inch walleye)
This is the 5th day in a row that the school buses have been cancelled. While we drove our kids into school the last two days, today we are waiting until it warms up a wee bit before we subject our vehicles to this insanity. It's so cold the dog didn't leave the deck to relieve himself. I don't blame him.
Seeing these majestic creatures never gets old.
Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and healthy 2021 Photo credit: Amy Newport Photography
Greetings from Wright’s Camp! Can you guess where our fishing spot is?
Lee is finished filling the freezer; first with a moose, and now a deer.
This Also, happy Canadian Thanksgiving
Today is opening day of moose season. We bundled up and took a quick jaunt around the nearby bays to see if we could see anything. No luck for us today, but it was a beautiful (and cold) morning.

Yay! We made it home today shortly after noon. What a whirlwind of a week that ended with such a positive outcome. Big thank you to John and JR at Canyon Lake Lodge that accommodated us for the last two nights of the evacuation. It’s been so encouraging to hear how our neighboring communities have been so welcoming and helpful to the residents of Red Lake during this stressful and uncertain time.

In other news- the Canada-US border will remain closday to nonessential travel for another 30 days.
An update about the current fire situation -Red Lake had a good downpour of rain a bit ago. More is expected tomorrow. Things are slowly looking better
Good news for Wrights Camp. Bad news for parts of Red Lake and Madsen.
So far things are looking optimistic for camp. The winds have died down, and should change directions tomorrow. We are staying at beautiful Snake Falls Camp and feel so grateful to be here. We will update again tomorrow. Also, a big thank you for all the kind words and messages. We feel the love
The MNR fire crew are busy setting up sprinklers on our cabins. We packed to leave for good but are hoping for the best. We are staying with friends down the highway. We will try to keep you updated, but things will be hectic for us for a while.
Standing on the office deck watching a forest fire heading our way and wondering when we should evacuate. Kids and pets are already in town with Grandma and Grandpa.
Well folks, it doesn’t look like we’ll get to see our lovely guests for August either (unlikely for September as well ). Let’s pray that things look better for 2021
Andrea has been braving the flies the past few days as she continues the staining project of cabin #11. I think we have enough projects to keep her busy for the rest of the summer. Most of them happen to involve a paint brush. On another note, Lee updated the blog if you’re interested. I hope you’re all having a good week!
Happy 4th of July to all our guests and friends south of the border. We miss you dearly and can’t wait for the day we can see you all again. Have a beautiful day!
This past spring we lost one of our very dear guests, Alan Salz. Below is a heartwarming letter from Bruce Venteicher that I am happy to share. I decided to write this little article in memory of my cousin Al Salz. Many of Wrights guests do not know who Al was but if you were a frequent guest on opening week and the first week in September for the past 25-30 years then you probably knew him. I am sad to report that Al passed away on April 7, 2020 from complications of b...rain surgery. He is sadly missed by his family and fishing friends. Al started at a very young age coming to Canada fishing with his parents mostly at the Lake of the Woods area. Sometime in the mid 1980's he was told about a great lake and a great camp called Weavers Wilderness Camp on Gull Rock Lake. The rest is history as Al and his fishing friends would now be coming to Gull Rock lake every spring and fall. Most of the time in the spring we lodged in cabin # 11, Al loved that cabin, the deck and the view of Gull Rock. It's a shame he didn't get to experience the new #11. In the fall we stay in cabin #5 and just love the view of the lake and the ease of getting to the dock. He enjoyed the Weavers and the Wrights and always spoke highly of the way they managed and maintained the camp. Al , along with his buddy Mike, were the fish cleaners, they enjoyed going to the fish house and cleaning fish, I believe Al might have told one or two of his jokes to others cleaning fish, the same jokes we heard year after year after year , but he enjoyed a new set of ears to listen to him. It was the same out on the lake, Al had his own way of striking up a conversation and throwing out another one or two of his jokes to others who would listen. At the same time he was telling his jokes, he would be nonchalantly crowding them out of their hot spot . So we nicknamed him Crowder, I'm sure other names also come to mind.! We also nicknamed him brochure boy as he more than once made the Wright's brochure with his infectious smile. He was the life of the party, so to speak. His memory of stories and jokes was unbelievable. He more than once said he enjoyed fishing but even more so the camp life, the playing cribbage, having a cocktail on the deck, telling stories of past fishing trips and visiting with the other guests and camp owners to name a few. With all that said, Al's fishing friends are looking forward to our next fishing trip to Wrights Wilderness Camp on beautiful Gull Rock Lake ,knowing that it will never be the same without Al. Thanks Lee and Stephanie for posting this!! See more
To call it fishing wouldn’t be fair. We just spent the last hour catching one fish after another. Mostly 15 and 16 inchers with a few 18’s and the odd over, but it was pure catching. All in about 5 feet of water.
