Yesterday's wind storm and resulting power outages, got us thinking about safety. Do you have a home emergency kit? . If not, we encourage you to put one together. Your emergency kit should have all the essential things that your household might need if you are forced to evacuate your home or shelter in place for an extended period. Here are some of the basic items. . Flashlight - if you lose electricity, you'll need a light source. Don't forget extra batteries if your flash...light is not a wind-up. You might also consider adding candles and matches (do not burn unattended). . Food & water - two litres of water per person per day. Keep food that won't spoil, such as canned food, energy bars, and dried foods. Twice a year, you should replace your water supply and check food expiration dates. . Medication - in case you can't reach a pharmacy. . Communication devices - be sure to write down contact information in case of emergencies, pack a battery-powered radio (and batteries), and a cellphone charger . Important Documents - such as identification, insurance, bank records, insurance info, and family photos. . Hygiene - toilet paper, garbage bags, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, toiletries, etc. . Consider also including - blankets/sleeping bags for each household member, additional water, activities for children, pet supplies, chlorine, utensils and plates and cups, duct tape, whistle, and basic tools.
