"When you go home, tell them of us and say, for their tomorrow we gave our today." So many answered the call, so many lost their lives. Today, we remember all Veterans and thank them for their service and sacrifice. #RemembranceDay #CanadaRemembers #LestWeForget
Trenton's was called Relief Project #28. The 1929 stock market crash and resulting world-wide depression struck just as construction on the Trenton Air Station ...was beginning. This made the base an ideal candidate for an official government "relief project." The camp at RCAF Trenton was just one of the many unemployment relief camps established across Canada by the federal government. The purpose was to provide work for single, unemployed and homeless Canadian males who had been laid off from their jobs during the great depression. Some of the camp occupants were teens whose parents couldn't afford to feed them. In return for a bed, three daily meals, work clothes, medical care and 20 cents a day, the men laboured at 44-hour work weeks clearing bush, building roads, planting trees and constructing buildings. Construction of the new base, which had began in the spring of 1930, also provided relief work for many Trenton men with families. It was estimated that "one man in six" who was head of a family was unemployed. The town issued relief vouchers amounting to $7000. Trenton citizens who were able donated food, clothing and fuel to help many families.
A new official Canadian portrait of Her Majesty The Queen is now available. The photograph was taken last year at Windsor Castle in the UK. Her Majesty is wear...ing her Canadian insignia, as Sovereign of the Order of Canada and the Order of Military Merit. Created in 1967 by Her Majesty, the Order of Canada is our country’s highest civilian honour. The Order of Military Merit recognizes distinctive merit and exceptional service displayed by the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces.
