‘‘Twas the morning of the last week of school... It hadn’t been easy, it hadn’t always been clear But our students had persevered and the end of the 2020 year was near... Home and School was tucked safely into bed, when what did we hear but sleigh bells ahead..... Our students are so awesome. We are so proud.... We think they deserved a treat to let them know out loud: We see you and all that you do. We wish you a Happy Holidays and your family too! Like Ms Bembridge said, Spread kindness and joy whenever you can... After school today children they’ll be a cookie in your hand!

The Scholastic book fair is here! Did you get these forms crumpled up in your child’s backpack yet?!
This year we allocated the money we would have spent on school holiday events to helping others in our community. In the spirit of giving, Hawthorn Home and School Association has unanimously agreed to give $150 to The North Grove and $150 to The Elizabeth Fry Society on behalf of the students of Hawthorn. A big Thanks to parent extraordinaire, Jacqui Briand who made this possible pictured here.
3 New Multi-coloured Four Squares were put down today by the HSA. Big thanks to Hawthorn parent Ashley Langille and Grade 3 Student Ben Fost for all their hard work!

Tomorrow is: Orange Shirt Day A day when we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada. We demonstrate the commitment to reconciliation and opening and continuing the dialogue about the history of those schools. Wearing orange shirts is a symbol of defiance against those things that undermine children's self-esteem, and of our commitment to anti-racism and anti-bullying in general. The slogan for Orange Shirt Day is Every Child Matters. Please join us in wearing an Orange Shirt on Wednesday September 30, 2020. #indigenouslivesmatter

Hawthorn Elementary School Update for August 27, 2020 from Principal Ms Williams Hart: Facemasks All students (PP-Grade 12) will be required to wear a mask when travelling on the school bus. ... When at school, all students Grades 4 to 12 (including Grade 3 students in a combined class with Grade 4s) will be required to wear a mask. Children in Pre-Primary to Grade 3 are not required to wear a mask in school. At Hawthorn Elementary, students in grades 4-6 wear their masks (including in hallways and other common areas) when they are unable to physically distance by 2 metres,. Masks can be removed when students are eating and drinking or taking part in indoor physical activity when a mask cannot be worn. Masks are not required during outdoor activities. We will provide each student with two cloth face masks on the first day of school. Grades 4-6 students will need a safe place to put their masks while they are outside as they will need to wear them going through the hallways when they come and go. We will also have a supply on hand if a child forgets or loses one during the day. Public Health has encouraged all of us to socialize the wearing of masks as a measure to protect our collective health. Here is a link to a video that you can watch with your children before the first day of school: https://www.canada.ca//covid-19-wear-non-medical-mask-face This information will also be posted on our website at: https://haw.hrce.ca/
Our Grade 6 Graduation Dinner looked a little different this year but our Grade 6’s celebrated their graduation with a socially distanced ice cream social event at Graham’s Grove Park this past Monday. Following in our great Hawthorn tradition they all jumped into the lake, reconnected and celebrated their achievement together. A big THANK YOU to our Grade 6 Graduation Committee who worked so hard on this event. Many thanks to Ms Williams Hart, Ms Johnson, Ms Urquart and Ki...wanis for making this possible. We wish all those Hawthorn Hawks the very best for their bright futures.
It was a lovely day at Hawthorn for our Playground Stencil Project. Hawthorn’s Home and School Association has put down some new stencils for our kids to enjoy their outdoor play. We will look at adding more playground stencils in the future but this was a good start. We would like to thank Councillor Sam Austin for the funding and Dartmouth South Academy for all their help making this project possible.
SCHOOL SUPPLY LISTS ARE UP! Thanks Ms Williams Hart & Hawthorn Teachers and Staff!!! https://haw.hrce.ca/haw/parents/school-supplies-2020-2021
Good Morning. We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about school supply lists. HSA will be looking ahead to the 2021/22 year to centralize school supplies with a PWYC model aiming to reduce waste and redundancy helping all families. Due to this unpredictable year the board voted against attempting to implement it this September. We also opted out of the Staples School Tools program due to the same uncertainty for the remainder of the 2020 year. Given the announcement on Fri...day from Zach Churchill, the supply needs are changing again. Hawthorn Administion has not been told by HRCE what they will actually receive for supplies and they won't get that answer until the 24th, so supply lists for parents won't be available until then either. What we do know for supplies is: Label everything Your child will need a backpack, water bottle, lunchbox. Ms Williams Hart has suggested many parents just send back to school the bags of unused supplies they received from their teachers in June. If you are having any financial issues getting supplies for your child please reach out to us. We are here for all of our parents and students and will keep you as informed as we can.

Many in our community have reached out to us to ask...How can we help others? Hawthorn parents, The DeCostes have turned their Little Free Library into a temporary Community Pantry located at 315 Portland Street. Many parents in our school community are helping to keep this neighbourhood pantry stocked as the need has risen and it still rises. Food insecurity is a conversation the DeCostes are having in their home. It’s a conversation we’ve had at Home and School. If you can... donate, please do. If you need, know it’s there. All donations are greatly appreciated. Please leave larger items or donations by the front door and smaller donations can be put directly into the pantry following proper COVID-19 hygiene. Take what you need, leave what you can. https://www.thechronicleherald.ca//active-community-pantr/

We will keep you all updated if we hear anything and we will continue to assess each new situation carefully as we proceed forward. ... Take Care of yourselves and each other, HSA
