Update on the Sears Canoe! The inside of the hull got its first coat of varnish this morning The seats and thwarts have also been varnished, the seats will get some rawhide lacing before the final coat of varnish.

Progress!! Seats and thwarts have been stripped and sanded, and sanding of the decks and inwales started today. Varnish will be soon, then canvas!!

Keel, or No Keel, that is the question Both of these centennial 25’ canoes are being refurbished over the next few months, Big Blue is my dads canoe, it’s being refurbished to it’s original look,... The white canoe came to me with lots of delaminated fibreglass, and a rotten and cracked keel. I’ve decided to remove the keel and reinforce the inside to keep it structurally strong. It’ll make it a fun river canoe. What’s your preference? Keel, or No Keel?

I meant to post this during the week, oops!! The Sears canoe got Inwales and Decks. The Inwales (pronounced in’l) are made from straight grain Ash, and the decks are made from Maple. ... Originally these canoes came with Spruce Inwales but hardwoods are much stronger, and last way longer! I’ve begun putting the planking back on the exterior, and re-clinching the loose tacks. Once I’m done clinching she’ll get some boiled linseed oil (BLO) on the interior wood, then I can roll her over and sand the exterior, the apply BLO there as well.

Sanding the inside of the Sears canoe is complete!!! Next will be stem repair, no small task
