Hey Heartbeat drummers...here are the six djembe variations for the rhythm Fanga, in Olatunji's style. I do each variation 4 times then straight into the next one. The rhythm isn't really meant to be played like this - it's a way of showing and practicing each variation on the pattern so you can learn them all and get them locked in. When playing this rhythm for real you can mix and match them according to your vibe. This is how the great Babatunde Olatunji showed us at a drumming retreat I went to with him years ago, so I like to teach it the same way he showed us. I play it first at a slow tempo, then a slightly faster version.

Heartbeat drummers...we meet again at Dundurn Park tonight at 7:00pm for Monday Night Drum Class! We have a nice spot available there where we can reasonably distance ourselves and still play. Gatherings of 10 or less are allowed now, so I think we'll be good. I'll have hand sanitizer available and if you feel more comfortable with a mask then by all means do it.

I will be heading down soon, drum in hand. Let's get together and unite. Drummers...the more we have there the better. Bring your drum.

Found this old beauty in the closet. The Drums of Fire drum and percussion club at Syl Apps, from my first teaching job almost 20 years ago. They put up some wicked performances back in the day.

Did a little socially distanced drumming with a couple of the Heartbeat Drums crew at Dundurn Park today. Just three of us, trying not to cause a big crowd but ...nice to play for the first time since lockdown. Missing the Monday night class! Maybe try this spot again with some of the rest of the class? Keeping the numbers low, like three or four, and with proper distancing? Trying not to create a mini Trinity Bellwoods of course...

Hey Heartbeat Drummers! Heading over to Dundurn Castle around 4:00 today to do a little drum session with Trish and Jim from the class. We're gonna see how it goes over with just a small, three-person group...keeping our social distance of course. If it seems like a good spot to play and there are no hassles, we can maybe set up some future jams there with others from the class. Maybe if we keep our numbers small? Also, Marino...maybe we can consider a jam out at your sp...ot in near future. :) I

In these challanging and yet special times, I think its good to continue sharing our creation and give inspiration to each other. Here is a FULL video from my l...ast trip to Senegal with my main teacher there: Aly Ndiaye Rose together with his son Prosper Ndiaye. This rhtyhm is called NDJOUK and it is pretty complex and intense, it belongs to the Serere tribe. This video was shot on Aly's rooftop just before friday prayer time and the atmosphere was special.
