Did you miss the familiar scents and tastes of the Highland Games season this year? Our friends at the Scottish Shoppe in Calgary do deliver, and not just in Calgary. All of us small businesses who rely on so many cancelled events could use some help these days, if you can, we’d recommend dropping by the Scottish Shoppe either in person or virtually!

Congratulations to our 2020 Atholl Clasp recipient - RSOBHD Vice President Jean Swanston. Jean was presented with her Atholl Clasp tonight by Atholl Dancing A...ssociation Chairman Liz Douglas at our online AGM. Update 28/11 - Jean is pictured below with Liz Douglas outside The Atholl Palace hotel which is where the AGM should have been held. The Golden Jubilee banner was made by Anne Pealing who was the ADA chairman in 2000, when the Atholl Clasp was first presented at Blair Castle. The design was the winning design for a t-shirt, which Jean still has!

There’s a big lack of ballet in my weekly routine these days, but my mom and I managed to stay connected with one of the dancers the lovely Ms @olivia.daugela making 50 masks as part of her effort to help out the homeless around her school. This already marginalized population might only have a small amount of change to zip into a McDonalds for a coffee and a sandwich and not having a mask shouldn’t be a barrier to access.

Last evening the Highland dance community lost one of it’s grand ladies Betty Lawrence, a teacher, judge, examiner and amazing mentor. We, as a family, had the priveledge of sharing much time, many dinners and laughs with this lady. She devoted most of her years to helping nurture the dance community in a positive way. She encouraged every dancer to reach their goal . To me she was totally unbiased in her advice, a rare commodity today. She joins her husband Matt. She will be missed by everyone whose life she has touched. Rest In Peace lovely lady

Ian and Marg own Highland In Style, a highland dance wear company in Calgary Midnapore. They’ve done something wonderful that I want to share with you... Duri...ng this pandemic, they have sold nearly 900 unique tartan masks, and have raised over $2,500 for the Legacy Place Society, an Alberta charity that provides mental health supports to front line workers (police, fire, EMS, and military). These funds are being directed towards suicide awareness and prevention initiatives in memory of Ms. Imogen Bellegarde, a highland dancer who took her life in 2018. I was pleased to join my colleague, Tom Kmiec at Highland in Style today to meet our shared constituents, learn more about their business and the issues that are important to them. If you would like to contribute to this wonderful cause, please visit www.highlandinstyle.com

Today I joined Stephanie Kusie to visit Ian and Marg, owners of Highland In Style a local Calgary company that usually makes highland dance wear. When COVID-1...9 hit, the company began making and selling tartan masks with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Legacy Place Society an Alberta charity providing mental health support to emergency responders and front line workers. During the pandemic and government-enforced shutdown of the economy this small business was able to find a way to rethink their operations while supporting a great local charity. I commend them on their innovation and their generosity. Check them out at www.highlandinstyle.com

Marg was more than happy to talk Tartan and Highland Dancing today with some important guests to the workshop. We were visited by our respective Members of Parliament Stephanie Kusie and Tom Kmiec to learn a little about what we do and our pivot to mask making. We also had guests from Legacy Place Society the beneficiary of our mask fundraisers. We have raised $2,892 for their first responder mental health programs, specifically directing the funds to suicide awareness and education in the memory of Miss Imogen Bellegarde.

Look who we’ve spotted with his Dress Calgary Tartan mask... Member of Parliament for Calgary Shepard Mr. Tom Kmiec. I had the pleasure of meeting Tom last week to thank him in person (socially distanced, through a car window) for his work over the past few months. Tom provides info and support early on when businesses like ours were in crisis. Thank you Tom! Enjoy your summer break even though it appears you’re still out there working!!
