As the pandemic continues to impact countries around the world, Philippines is no exception. Due to the island of Boracay's dependance on the tourism for its main source of revenue and jobs, the majority of locals are still without work. This situation continues to worsen in the poorer communities where Strong Roots Ministries works. Many single mothers struggling to provide for their children, elderly not having the means to purchase vital medication, and countless in the co...mmunity not knowing where their next meal will come from! As long as the financial support allows, Joven and his team of volunteer staff remain committed to offering daily meals to over 375 families in the community who are most in need. To date, since the start of the pandemic - thanks to many generous donors, Strong Roots has been able to provide 41,250 family meals. Joven shares this recent experience: "There was a father in the community that wanted to commit suicide because he feels that he is unable to provide for his family. When his wife contacted me, I was able to offer counsel and support. He and his family have given their lives to Jesus and now attends our church and volunteer with the feeding program." This family of 6 had been living with a priest until he could not help them anymore, so they had to move out. Someone let them build a small shack on some land and then after a few months they were asked to leave. Then they went down to one of the local dumps where they pile the trash, there they built a small shack and that is where they are living now. The local government has said they can't stay there, but they don't have any other options at this time. Their Dad goes out... to the country for 6-8 hours to help work in some gardens to try and get some food for the family. The Mom will try and sell some cherries and other small things to help make ends meet. Haiti Bible Mission buys what they are selling to try and help them. We are very excited to see the 10,000 books gathered and sent from Chilliwack have made it to Kenya. May they be a blessing to all the children who read them! Thanks to all of those involved in the process of getting the books to Seje!
