Margaret Atwood was a keynote speaker and explored the themes of climate change, COVID-19 and community in a session that promised to be thought provoking, insightful, and animated with Atwood's acerbic humour. Referencing a UBCM press release: Atwood’s accomplishments over the course of her career include the 1985 novel The Handmaid’s Tale that has... been adapted into an eleven-time Emmy Award-winning television series, and its sequel, The Testaments, which won the 2019 Booker Prize. When I think of the contributions of Canadian artists to public thought and awareness, Margaret Atwood is unsurpassed, said Mayor Maja Tait, UBCM president. Over the course of her career she has helped us more clearly see and understand the forces that shape human experience and the health of the planet. Among these incredible speakers was Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer here in British Columbia. Other speakers included Mayor Maya Tait, UBCM President, The Honourable Janet Austin, OBC, Lieutenant Governor of BC, and Kim Baird, former Chief of Tsawwassen First Nation. #UBCM2020

While it is impossible to recreate the experience of an in-person Convention, we have made every effort to adjust the agenda for the annual meeting to work within an online format. T...his year's theme is 'diversity by design' and the agenda highlights key issues facing communities in British Columbia, and the steps that are needed collectively by all levels of government to address those challenges. Throughout the meeting, delegates will hear from the Premier, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Green Party. A keynote address will be presented by Margaret Atwood, Canadian poet, novelist, and literary critic. The convention will continue through to September 30th, 2020 with workshops, plenary sessions, policy sessions, annual meetings for organizations, and more.
