Interested in how to stop the next pandemic? Learning about synthetically engineered pathogens and biosecurity? iGEM McMaster and McMaster Effective Altruism will be hosting Chris Bakerlee on July 3rd for a conversation about mitigating both naturally occurring and synthetically engineered biological threats. Chris is pursuing a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University. The session’s facilitator, Chris Bakerlee, is a Ph.D. candidate in Harvard University'...s Molecular and Cellular Biology department, where he uses genetic engineering to study how evolution works. Chris is also a 2020 Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity Initiative (ELBI) fellow at the John Hopkins University, and led the 2019-2020 Emerging Tech Policy Network at Harvard's Kennedy School. He is particularly interested in pandemic risk mitigation, exploring interventions from both the policy, science, and technology perspectives. If you want to explore the topic, Chris has written an article about biorisk: Designer bugs: How the next pandemic might come from a lab: https://www.vox.com//superbugs-biotech-pathogens-biorisk-p We’d love to see you there!
