The Indigenous Law Students’ Association (ILSA) and the Indigenous Initiatives Office (IIO), invite you to join us this Thursday, October 22 at noon for an education and action-based event in support of the Mi’kmaq People of the area now known as Nova Scotia. More than two decades ago, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld and affirmed the Mi’kmaq Right to fish for the purpose of earning moderate livelihoods. Last month the Sipekne’katik First Nation opened a self-regulated lobs...ter fishery outside of the commercial fishing season regulated by the Canadian federal government. In the weeks since, settlers have destroyed property and committed violent attacks against members of the Sipekne’katik First Nation. On Thursday at noon Angela D’Elia Decembrini, lawyer at First Peoples Law Corporation and legal counsel for Sipekne’katik First Nation, will give an overview of the ongoing conflict. Professor Kent Roach will join us at 1 p.m. to discuss the role of policing in this ongoing conflict and the historic relationship between the RCMP and Indigenous communities across the country. Following the presentations, ILSA will provide attendees with resources to aid in mobilizing support for this community. We hope that you will stick around to email your relevant representatives with us (templates will be provided!) and find other ways to offer tangible support to the Mi’kmaq people. EVENTBRITE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED and the zoom link will be sent out on Thursday morning: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/all-eyes-on-mikmaki-tickets-126
