Jay is the Christmas Tree Specialist, working directly with Christmas tree growers and their associations to support the growth and sustainability of one of Nov...a Scotia’s staple industries. Every day is different for Jay, sometimes she's teaching a course, sometimes she's soil sampling, sometimes she's running statistics on research results, and most times she's on Zoom in planning meetings or writing up reports. Regardless of the role, the best thing about working in agriculture is the diversity of the day-to-day and the opportunities to collaborate with people across multiple disciplines. Jay has a Master’s in Agriculture and has been around the agricultural industry her whole life, but if you’d asked her ten years ago, she would never have predicted where she'd end up. There are so many opportunities in NS agriculture if you’re willing to learn something new. She is constantly learning new things and meeting new people. One message for women in ag on #IWD2021? "Regardless of what you’re interested in (I started out with Physics), there is a place for you in agriculture and you’ll be welcomed with open arms."
We asked, and the OVERWHELMING response was that most folks leave their tree up until Old Christmas Full disclosure: I didn't even know what Old Christmas was u...ntil I asked this question and SO many of you agreed with my Mom, who also takes down at OC. Who knew!?! In any case, that's this week coming so don't forget to dispose of or recycle your tree responsibly. Here are some options: 1 - Curbside Pick-Up (check the Divert NS sorting guide) and your county's waste collection schedule. 2 - Reuse Your Tree: There are loads of clever options for using your tree beyond Christmas. Here are a few: Remove the branches and use as winter protection for your shrubs Turn it into mulch! Plant potted trees (we went with a potted tree this year...so it's getting planted!) Sink it in a pond (that you own) to create refuge and feeding areas for pond life. Make Potpourri (if you're into that kind of crafty thing) Support community programs - check the local news! Many communities have chipping programs or use trees for other environmental purposes. The point is, having a real tree is a sustainable practice that not only supports our local farmers but also supports the environment but it's OUR responsibility to be ...errr...responsible with the take-down process. How do you dispose of your real tree? Christmas Tree Council of Nova Scotia #iloverealtrees #nsrealtreememories
