When reflecting on the past decade, 2020 has been recognized as one of the most memorable for a multitude of reasons, none more obvious than the pandemic. However, 2020 holds a special place in the hearts and memories of many Iranian-Canadian families, as our year began with the heartbreaking news that the Ukraine International Airline Flight PS752 was shot down by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corp; a tragedy where the life and hopes of 176 innocent passengers, 30 of whic...h were children under the age of 18 years old, were cut short in a matter of seconds early in morning on January 8th, 2020. Members of the Edmonton-Iranian community lost friends, relatives, and loved ones, many of whom were both students and professors from the University of Alberta: professors Mojgan Daneshmand and Pedram Mousavi along with their children Darya and Darina Mousavi, students and alumni Pouneh Gorji, Elnaz Nabiyi, Arash Pourzarabi, Nasim Rahmanifar, Saba and Sara Saadat along with their mother Dr. Shekoufeh Choupannejad, Amir Saeedinia, and Mohammad Mahdi Elyasi. On the anniversary of this tragedy, the PS752Justice group has launched a GoFundMe to continue their fight for justice, and are accepting donations to further pursue their cause. This past year was one full of many challenges. It was a year filled with nostalgia, with tears, with tension, and with pain. Let the shadow cast upon our lives by this disease pass just as the year has and, as the clock strikes 12 on this cold winter night, in its stead come a fresh breath of air for the world and its citizens. We hope that the New Year will bring with it warmth, hope, and light so that we may spend 2021 in good health and prosperity, surrounded by the family and friends we have so dearly missed.
