Jewish Federation of Edmonton 09.11.2020

Thank you to Avraham Infeld for his talk today with members of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton. We learned today that we as a Jewish people need to be unified, not uniform. We hope to echo this in our programming and outreach in the years to come. We look forward to our next speaker Kathy Kacer who will speak about "What I've Heard and What I've Learned: Lessons From Survivors of the Holocaust" on December 16, 2020. The Jewish Drop-In Seniors’ Centre Still Here, Still Goin’ Strong! Even a once in a century event like the COVID pandemic can’t stop the Jewish Senior Citizens’ Centre from going strong. Throughout it all, the Centre is offering a creative array of activities and classes to engage and inspire Jewish seniors. Fitness instructors Bonnie and Ilonka keep members strong and lively with in-home workouts, via Zoom. The Urban Polling class works out on city sidewalks, face masks on... and sticks in hand. The Learning in Retirement Series resumed in mid-October, online, serving the intellectually curious with lectures about Turning Points in Jewish History, A History of Keyboard Instruments, and Art Museums of New York City. Always known for its delicious food, even with its kosher lunch service on hold, the Centre is now providing a selection of its delicious kosher soups, available for take-out. Plans are in the works for a full take-out menu in 2021. Thanks to your support of the Jewish Drop-In Seniors’ Centre through UJA, the Centre continues to nurture healthy bodies, active minds and happy tummies through these challenging times. Please make a gift to the 2020/21 UJA Campaign! https://www.paypal.com/donate/ Thank you for your generosity! Have a wonderful weekend and Shabbat Shalom.

When you think of isolation, COVID-19 probably comes to mind. Sadly, for our senior population, isolation has always been a part of everyday life. Back in March, when our city swiftly shuttered its doors against the pandemic, restrictions on visiting loved ones in care homes, or those living independently, became insurmountable. Many of our seniors were alone for far longer extended periods than ever before. Immediately concerned by the impact on our vulnerable seniors, Jewis...h Family Services Edmonton (JFSE) swung into action. A task force, led by Tatiana Kastner and Rhonda Eidelman, ensured that JFSE was able to support all of its Jewish clients in need, even those not funded by the Claims Conference. The JFSE team phoned clients to check in on their welfare and organized volunteers to drop off food hampers in celebration of Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Victory day in Europe (celebrating the Nazi surrender). Dozens of hampers containing nutritious foods, Jewish treats, flowers and games were distributed to isolated seniors, bringing much joy, comfort and gratitude. As one of their clients said, It is so good to know that someone cares about us! Especially now, when we stay at home most of the time due to the pandemic. I appreciate all the gifts, even the smallest ones! I thank you for bringing me the food from the store I love! I am so grateful for all the phone calls I receive from you! It means a lot!-JFSE Client Your support of JFSE, through your gift to UJA, brings sweetness and warmth to our seniors at a most difficult time. Thank you for your generosity. Have a great weekend and Shabbat Shalom.

BREAKING NEWS: Facebook bans Holocaust Denial. CIJA has been engaging with Facebook's policy team over many months to help them understand how antisemitism ma...nifests on their platform. We welcome today's announcement and look forward to continuing this important conversation. More than an assault on truth, Holocaust denial and distortion are some of the most insidious forms of antisemitism. The claim that the genocide of six million Jews was either a hoax or an exaggeration hinges on classic antisemitic themes of a manipulative world Jewish conspiracy.
