View the trailer for The Chosen. Screening 7:00 PM on March 8 at the Norman Rothstein Theatre, The Chosen is wrapping up the festival. #VJFF2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch
This 1981 classic film based on Chaim Potok’s 1967 novel of the same name, The Chosen does an excellent job of distilling the essence of the book into a Hollywood drama. Robbie Benson is admirably restrained here as an ultra-Orthodox Jew, and Barry Miller is equally convincing as his more liberal friend and story's narrator. Two iconic Oscar winning actors, Maximilian Schell and Rod Steiger, playing the roles of the boys’ fathers’ lead the cast. Director Jeremy Kagan’s presentation of sons and fathers whose loyalties and interests intersect in 1947 in unexpected ways offers us a fascinating glimpse at friendship and filial devotion in 1947 during a very specific cultural era. View the trailer for Incitement. Screening 6:45 PM tonight (March 5) at Fifth Avenue Cinemas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCsqevb0tOc
Incitement, a 2020 submission to the Academy Awards, depicts the lead-up to the 1995 assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin through the worldview of his assassin, Yigal Amir. The film explores the murder, a defining moment in the volatile Israeli -Palestinian peace process. This topic has never been depicted in a feature film, until now. Israeli-American filmmaker Yaron Zilberman sets out to unearth the motivations that led to Rabin's death with a rigorous exac...ting gaze. Set in the year preceding the assassination, Zilberman's meticulously crafted period piece is embedded in the world of Amir, moving from his family home to his failed relationships to his political radicalization. #VJFF2020 Playing Thursday March 5. Get tickets here. https://www.vjff.org/events/event/incitement/
Emmanuelle Mayer’s directorial debut is a moving documentary portrait, pieced out of ten years of intimate footage. Emphasizing the profound gap between developing Africa and the West, the film contrasts male and female narratives and raises ideas of choice versus fate. Johnny and Therèse live in Israel, he believes in the future of Africa, he dreams of returning with modern fish farming techniques. Therèse sees little hope back home and is determined to create the best possi...ble future for their children, whatever the price may be. When their visas expire, tensions between the two arise. Tickets available here. #VJFF2020 https://www.vjff.org/events/event/a-fish-tale/
