On Friday, we have the second half of the Leadership Class out, and we started weeding in the Food Forest. We are doing 'Chop and Drop' weeding here - because we want to build up the organic material in the garden, we are leaving the weeds in place, and they will be covered with leaves and then wood chips later in the fall.

Many thanks to Mike R, who brought his tractor out to cover the beds the Leadership Class had prepared.

We had students from the Leadership Class at the garden this week. We were able to spread the last of the leaves collected last fall - just in time to start collecting more ! The recipe we are following here is : - apply a thick layer of leaves - sprinkle with compost, to help inoculate the composting process... - apply a thick layer of wood chips Our plan here is to maintain the wood chip layer to reduce the weeds, and make them easier to pull. When it's time to plant, we will move the wood chips aside to expose the soil beneath, and plant. When the seedlings are large enough, the wood chip layer can be replaced around the stem.

What an awesome work party! We topped up the herb garden with compost, made stepping stone paths, planted herbs - bee balm, lemon balm, oregano, thyme, walking onions, and sage, and gave the whole bed a thick cover of mulch to help keep the moisture.

The weekly work party will take place on Saturday, 10:00-12:00. Plan is to plant herbs in the newly installed herb bed, and to finish spreading leaves for mulch!

What's this, then? Haskaps are ripe and yummy (we did a taste test!). Coming up are cherries, black currants, and (eventually) blueberries.

Daniel Smith assembled and tested the "wet end" of our solar water pumping system today. We have a bilge pump, a check value, and a float switch in a crate, which needed to be connected, soldered, and then protected with a water-proof tape splice. We now have (battery-powered) water at the Garden :)... (Solar is the next step)
