When someone is struggling with a physical illness, we say: You need to go to the doctor, it is only getting worse. When someone is struggling with a mental illness, we say: You need to stop complaining, it isnt that bad.

A line from The novel Educated by Tara Westover Mother often described herself as a pleaser: she said she couldnt stop herself from speculating what people wanted her to be, and from contorting herself, compulsively, unwillingly, into whatever it was.

I agree that CBT is very client specific. Some people grab onto and love it and find it really helpful. Others, do not even want to read a paragraph, never mind write something down. That being said I think CBT done in a very informal way can add to the whole therapeutic experience. Most importantly therapy has to be tailor made to the client.
