The NDP's flip flop on LNG is indicative of everything that is wrong in politics. In opposition, BC NDP leader John Horgan stated, "Christy Clark is desperate to make her LNG promises come true. She's given companies what they wanted, then more. And now she wants the ability to give them even more tax breaks and long term deals without any public openness." Apparently, to be leader of the opposition is not a matter of taking principled and evidence-based positions, but rat...her to simply say the opposite of whatever government says. It's no wonder that people have lost faith in politics. It's no wonder that people have lost confidence in the leaders elected to represent them. It's no wonder people believe that nothing changes because politicians will say one thing and then do another. It's no wonder because that is exactly what happened last week with John Horgan and the BCNDP on LNG. What makes it even worse is that the BCNDP and John Horgan didn’t just take a page out of the BC Liberal playbook, they are offering to give away an even better deal. Their major flip flop means LNG Canada (a joint venture company comprised of Shell, PetroChina, KOGAS, & Mitsubishi Corp), would get exemptions from the carbon tax and PST and eliminate the BC Liberal's LNG tax. In opposition, John Horgan opposed B.C. Hydro power at the standard industrial rate to LNG producers, claiming it was a "subsidy" to them from residential ratepayers. The present BC NDP offer would provide cheap electricity to LNG Canada at the expense of the BC rate payer. And this does not even begin to address the impact on meeting climate target emissions. Given the timing of this LNG announcement one can not help but suspect that the delay of presenting the climate plan is strategic because the BC NDP knows it will be difficult, if not impossible, to demonstrate that we can both meet our climate targets and pursue LNG. Regardless of your position on LNG, what is indisputable is that John Horgan will say one thing and do another. This is everything that is wrong and distasteful about politics: politicians who say and do what is politically expedient instead of what is principled and evidence based. Whether in government or in opposition, our leaders should take a stand on an issue out of conviction for what they believe to be right and avoid the knee-jerk response to oppose for the sake of opposition. Imagine how much better off the people of BC would be having leaders who put them, and not politics, first.
