It is time to have a conversation about labour, working conditions and fair pay. Covid-19 has made it clear how reliant we are as a society not only on first responders and health professionals, but on many other workers, like retail clerks and cleaning staff. The Dominion strikes and the claw back of pay increases for front-line employees are unacceptable and demonstrate the failure of our government to act. Over 50,000 workers in Newfoundland and Labrador are paid less tha...Continue reading

Executive Council April 13, 2021 The following is being distributed at the request of the Council of Atlantic Premiers.... Reopening of Atlantic Bubble Delayed Protecting the health of Atlantic Canadians remains the overriding priority of Atlantic Premiers. Premier Blaine Higgs of New Brunswick chaired a teleconference of the Council of Atlantic Premiers with Premier Iain Rankin of Nova Scotia, Premier Dennis King of Prince Edward Island and Premier Andrew Furey of Newfoundland and Labrador. They reviewed the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region and considered how to move forward on reducing travel restrictions within the Atlantic region. Given the recent surge in cases of COVID-19 in parts of Atlantic Canada and the emergence of more transmissible forms of the virus, the Council of Atlantic Premiers has agreed to delay the reopening of the Atlantic Bubble by at least two weeks, to May 3rd, 2021. The decision is based upon expert advice from the region’s Chief Medical Officers of Health. Premiers will meet during the last week of April to review the status of outbreaks and determine if a further delay to May 10th, 2021 is required. This delay will support a continued focus on addressing local outbreaks and the roll-out of vaccination programs across the region. Premiers urge all Atlantic Canadians to adhere to public health measures designed to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. When the Atlantic Bubble reopens, residents of the Atlantic provinces will be able to travel within the region without the requirement to self-isolate for 14 days. All public health directives in each province must continue to be followed, including wearing a mask in public spaces, not traveling if experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 and practicing physical distancing. Premiers noted that the relaxation of travel restrictions will be closely monitored and may change at any time, based on public health advice regarding conditions within the region. Premiers remain committed to working together to limit the spread of COVID-19, protect the health and safety of all Atlantic Canadians and strengthening the region’s economy while returning to community activities. Over these past few weeks, the Labrador City Fire Department has been dispatched to a few major incidents, and the readiness of our fire service is always at... its best. Our Fire Fighters prove time and time again, that they are ready, willing and able to perform at the highest level due to the rigorous training they endure and constant review of mastered skills. There are over 70 Fire Fighters in the Labrador West area; we are very proud of the competence in each person and the high standards they set for themselves in the delivery of service. Our strength truly is in our people! The community and surrounding area should be very grateful to have such a dedicated group of volunteers who rise to face mishaps that this world tends to throw at us. As winter swiftly approaches, we would like to remind building officials and homeowners to keep all exits of buildings and homes free of snow and ice buildup. Please ensure that you have access to all your exits, including any sheds / garages on your property, and especially basement windows of sleeping rooms within your home, making it easier to get out safely if the need should arise. It is the utmost importance to have an emergency exit, if you can’t get out, that means we will have difficulty getting in. Please help us help you! The Fire Department would also like to remind you of the importance in keeping access to fire hydrants maintained. Our staff work very hard every winter to ensure that hydrants are cleared for an emergency, please do not blocked them with snow from your property. In the event of an emergency, quickly accessing hydrants is very important! Yours in Fire & Life Safety, Fire Chief Joe Power

It was my pleasure to present a Members’ Statement today to acknowledge the Labrador West Ground Search and Rescue Team. I wanted to highlight the work that this team does for Labrador West all year round. COVID did not stop this team from preparing and training, this year they have spent 1871 hours in meetings, training and searches, and 562 community service hours, they’ve had 11 calls ranging from Little Wabush to Schefferville. Because of COVID they are unable to reach ou...t to schools to get the message out about the dangers of venturing onto thin ice, especially on snowmobile. I ask that you follow Labrador West Search and Rescue and keep up-to-date on anything they may post about any safety matters and please speak to children and young teens about safety while they are enjoying outdoor activities. Again, I want to thank this volunteer team and as well as the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary for everything they have done and continue to do to keep us all safe. Jordan Brown, MHA, Labrador West Member’s Statement Labrador West Ground Search and Rescue November 3rd, 2020 I rise today to give recognition to the Labrador West Ground Search and Rescue team. The Labrador West Search and Rescue team formed in 1982 and currently has 35 members. Even with near total shutdown because of the pandemic this year they have been on standby or in action for 11 callouts and about 4800 hours spent on the field. The Labrador West Ground Search and Rescue team train for hours in every weather condition so that they can be prepared to deploy in a moment’s notice to help those who are lost and may be injured. What some may not realize is that they are also at most community events volunteering to help with traffic control and first aid during parades, marathons and hockey tournaments. These volunteers provide their services to ensure our rowers are safe during regatta. They also educate our residents on how to enjoy outdoor activities safely and give presentations to our children in school. I ask all honorable members to join me in thanking the Labrador West Ground Search and Rescue team for all of the work they do to keep our community educated and safe all year round.
