Earlier today, Navdeep Bains announced that he is stepping down as Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry to spend more time with his family. To fill the opening created by his announcement, we are making the following changes to the Canadian Ministry: Minister François-Philippe Champagne becomes Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. His extensive business experience will be key to creating jobs and rebuilding our economy. He’ll also be a strong voice for what r...ural and small-town communities need to succeed. Minister Marc Garneau becomes Minister of Foreign Affairs. From leading Canada’s efforts on the Safer Skies Initiative to his work on the Canada-US Relations Cabinet Committee, Marc will bring a great deal of experience to his new portfolio. Parliamentary Secretary Omar Alghabra becomes Minister of Transport. With an engineering background and a history of advocating for public transit in the GTA, I know Omar will do an outstanding job in this new role. Finally, in addition to serving as Special Representative for the Prairies, Jim Carr joins the Ministry. Jim’s health has improved, and we’re looking forward to having him back at the Cabinet table where he’ll continue to be a strong advocate for people in the Prairies. From Polytechnique to Portapique, guns have been used to cause too many tragedies and claim too many lives. It must stop. This morning, I spoke in the House of Commons about the need to end this violence and combat the misogyny, racism, and hatred that is often behind it. We also talked about the holidays, and how we’ll need to keep following public health guidelines. You know the drill. If you live where cases are surging, skip non-essential outings. If you’re able to work from home, do that. If you have any symptoms, don’t go out. It’s almost tax season, and as you begin to prepare your tax return - which is important, since that’s how you can get things like the Canada Child Benefit, the Climate Action Incentive, and the deduction for working from home - there are a few things you should keep in mind. If you received federal emergency benefits this past year - such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit - and you made under $75,000 in taxable income, you won’t have to pay interest on 2020 tax debt u...ntil April of next year. This gives you more time and flexibility to pay if you have an amount owing. On top of that, if you accessed the Canada Emergency Response Benefit based on your gross income instead of your net income, as long as you meet all other eligibility criteria, you won’t have to return the payments you received. Update: As of today, business owners can apply for new support measures. If you own a small business, run a charity, or operate a non-profit that has suffered a drop in revenue because of the pandemic, the new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy is there to help you. It will cover up to 65% of your rent, and will now come directly to you - not through your landlord. If your business is facing a public health lockdown order, more assistance is available for you - the new Lockdown Su...pport could boost your rent subsidy by 25%. Combined with the regular rent assistance, hard-hit businesses could receive a rent subsidy of up to 90%. On top of this support, the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy has been extended until June of next year. So if you need help keeping your employees on the payroll during these tough times, this support remains available to you. A few weeks ago, my six-year-old son asked me: Dad, is COVID-19 forever? It’s not. And we need to keep that in mind. Because yes, this sucks - but better days are coming. If we keep working hard and following public health guidelines, we will get through this together.

We’re building thousands of new homes for people across the country. Because everyone deserves a safe place to live, and no one should have to face this pandemic on the streets. Through our Rapid Housing Initiative, we’re investing $1 billion to get this work done quickly. And today, we announced how we’re getting this support out the door. For our largest cities, which are facing an urgent need for safe and affordable housing, we’re providing $500 million in immediate suppor...t. And we’re putting up another $500 million for other municipalities, provinces and territories, Indigenous organizations, and non-profits. This funding will make it possible to quickly develop multi-unit rentals, convert non-residential buildings into multi-residential homes, and renovate abandoned buildings into affordable housing. Plus, not only will this support help reduce homelessness, it’ll also create good jobs in the housing and construction sectors and fuel our economic recovery. This was a promise our government made to small businesses - and today, this support is available through the larger financial institutions.
