A Story About An Older Sister Karyn’s older sister Kathy sent her a photograph she found on Pinterest of a big chunky bracelet with an imitation opal stone, so she requested Karyn make it for her. Karyn, unable to find a synthetic opal of that size, shape, and quality, told her it couldn’t be done. But Kathy was hell bent on getting her cuff, so she sourced out a chunk of synthetic opal from Japan. Synthetic opal is resin mixed with genuine opal material, and this one was t...he size of a deck of cards! Now she asked Karyn to cut it and polish it to shape, but once again she was turned down. Karyn was not a lapidary (someone who cuts and polishes gemstones) so she didn’t think she could do it. Kathy was not one to take no for an answer when it came to her younger sister, so she did not accept defeat. She arranged for her and Karyn to meet with a lapidary shop in Brentwood Bay near her home. Karyn received a tutorial on what tools to use to carve and polish the opal and Kathy finally received the sterling silver and synthetic opal cuff she had been dreaming of. We have the coolest clients! Shelley heard about us through the Lion’s Gate Chorus that she sings with. On top of being a singer, Shelley also practices martial arts! We love a woman with diverse tastes. Despite being young, she unfortunately has arthritis in her knuckles and can no longer wear many of her favourite rings. But luckily, that’s something we can help with! We used her existing diamonds and sapphires and created this sophisticated 18k white and yellow gold rin...g. But what makes this ring even more special, is that is was built with an arthritic shank, a hinge in the band allowing Shelley to open it up and slip it over her finger, avoiding the knuckle altogether. Once upon a time a beautiful young woman was given her Dad's signet ring he wore as a young man. It adorned her finger for many years until one day it was stolen from her on a trip through through South East Asia. She thought about that ring often, missing it very much. Finally, 5 years later, she approached us to recreate it. Karyn worked closely with her and sketched the ring going on only the client's memory and a few vague photos. We built it in 10k yellow gold with a da...zzling labradorite, and she was so pleased with the results! This incredible, flashy stone is called Ammolite. Ammolite is a fossilized shell of 75 million year old sea creature called ammonites. What makes it so rare is that it is only found in one place in the world- the Rocky Mountains in southern Alberta. The most valuable ones have 3 or more colour shifts called the chromatic shift.
