What the Friday?!? Quantitative Quality Indicators (QQI) are used to verify the direction of a magnetic field and sensitivity of a magnetizing technique. In this photo, the inspector is replicating poor contact angle which he expects to encounter during his inspection due to limited access.... The QQI being used is a form of Artificial Flaw Indicator, and replicates indications of a known size/depth. The 3 lines appearing on the QQI quantitatively prove to the inspector that if any indications are present in an area where the legs of the yoke have poor contact, the indications would still be quite visible. Other variables which can be verified with a QQI include: Pole/Leg spacing Current type/amperage Method of particle application Non-conductive coating thickness Surface preparation Surface temperature Find more quality solutions @ www.kayelleindustrial.com

Solidification Cracking, also known as Hot Cracking. As the weld progresses, metal ahead of the pool is constantly being melted, new liquid metal is added from the electrode, and the liquid pool solidifies behind. This dynamic process reaches a steady state where the pool remains a constant size and is stationary relative to the moving arc. The direction of grain growth of the solid tends to be parallel to the maximum temperature gradient. If the weld is moving slowly, a sho...rt, almost round weld pool exists, and the maximum temperature gradient is normal to the isotherms. The solid will, therefore, tend to grow forward. If the weld is moving very rapidly the pool extends well behind the arc and takes on an elongated shape. The direction of growth now tends to be in towards the centerline of the weld. A fast welding speed causes the crystals to grow towards each other with a risk of trapping liquid and impurities. This may potentially lead to cracking along the weld centerline where the solidifying crystal meet each other. See more
