UPDATE: You are AMAZING!! With your generosity and that of our matching donor we have reached our target of $4,000. We are now working with our Kenya-based coordinator to ensure Maurene's surgery goes ahead without delay. We'll keep you updated on Maurine's progress. Thank you again for all your support! The Kenya Foundation to Aid Children through Education works to make education financially viable for very poor girls in Kenya. We accept girls who have little hope of ...even going to high school. Now, after ten years, we are delighted that all of our 40 students have been able to complete a high school education, and 30 of them went on to diploma or university programs. One of our students, Maurene, is a special situation and we are asking for your help with this truly merciful and worthy cause. Maurene suffers from Sickle Cell Anemia, a genetic blood disease far more common in Africa than in North America. She has been hospitalized several times during the eight years we sponsored her, with severe and painful complications. About to graduate from university, she has been hospitalized twice this year. She risks becoming lame as her painful condition worsens. With some extra help from her sponsor, she has had x-rays, transfusions and sees a Specialist who tells us that her only option is a hip replacement. KFACE is determined to help. Her insurance covers only one third of the $6,000 cost. Her friends and family in Kenya are fundraising for her, but their ability to give is low. We need to raise $4,000 for the surgery, as soon as possible. We are privileged to have a supporter who will match your donation dollar for dollar. So, double the impact of your gift to help Maurene now. To make a truly consequential gift please visit our website at www.kface.org. Thank you for your generosity.

A very lovely letter from our recent graduate, Valarie <3 I am writing this letter to offer my sincere gratitude for your financial help and support throughout my entire high school and university studies. Thank you all for believing in me. I would love to inform you that I graduated on 13th November 2020 with a first class honours in Business Administrator and Management (finance option). I must admit the journey wasn't an easy one, but through hard work and determination, I... made it and I'm proud I was among the best students in my class. This achievement is just the beginning. I would wish to continue with my studies to masters and even phd level. Due to the pandemic we held a virtual graduation and I am happy my friends together with kface students and George joined me in celebrating my greatest achievement. The sponsorship has surely changed my life. I have been able to achieve more than I ever thought I would achieve, all thanks to the kface family. By awarding me the sponsorship you lightened my financial burden. You ensured my rent and fees were paid on time and ensured that all I had to do was to focus on my studies. Your generosity has motivated and challenged me to one day give back to the less fortunate children in the society the same help you offered me. Thank you all kface members and may God bless you all. Keep safe always, Valarie

One of our students, Vivian, who was studying in China, sent us a message about how COVID-19 has changed things for her: Hello Marguerite, I'm doing great together with my family and we're happy, especially my mother. The China state declaration of Corona virus found me in Kenya when I had gone for winter holiday and I've not been able to go back since then. Fortunately we're going on with our classes online and I'm doing well with my studies.... I can never forget the kindness and huge favor I received from KFACE and I'm what I am today because of this great organization. Thank you so much for touching lives especially the less privileged. I'm glad to know that you're doing well together with your family, my regards to them and the KFACE team. Thank you for keeping in touch. Regards Vivian Atieno For more information on our foundation and to make a donation please visit our website at www.kface.org.

The following is a message sent to our students from KFACE Director and Sponsor, Erma Weernink regarding COVID-19. To our KFACE family, We hope that you and your families are doing well and are staying home and safe as much as possible. I appreciate that this has been a difficult and disruptive year for learning with first the school riots and now the pandemic.... I wanted to write you all to give a very serious warning about how dangerous this virus is. I have heard a couple of disturbing comments: there are only a few cases in Kenya and that number won’t go up and Kenyans have a very strong immunity and so it won’t affect us. These are very dangerous and frightening beliefs. Please believe the science!! One advantage that Kenya has is that it can learn from the experience of other countries that have been battling the disease for a few weeks. That includes Canada. I am happy to hear that the Kenyan government is putting into place many measures to try to contain the virus. But it will take EVERY ONE to try to stop the health crisis. Kenya has some major disadvantages as well with a lack of sanitation, crowded public transport and markets and a health system not able to respond as well. Please practice social distancing that means staying at least 2 metres from people outside of the home, only going out when absolutely necessary, avoid all social gatherings, and STOP SHAKING HANDS. The most effective thing you can do for yourself is to wash your hands properly with soap and water (at least 20 seconds so sing a song to yourself or say a prayer or two and make sure that you are getting both front and back of hands, between fingers the thumbs and the wrists.) The virus has a weakness in that it has some lipid in its protein capsid and the soap will dissolve this. Those of you studying biology will understand what that means. It is also important to stay informed by following reputable sites such as the World Health Organization. Believe the science. Even though in many cases the symptoms are mild and many of you are in reasonably good health. That does not make you immune. Your immune system develops antibodies and killer T cells to pathogens that it has already encountered. This is a brand new virus and your system has never encountered it before. There is no cure and there is no vaccine although scientists are working around the clock (there may be a vaccine a year from now). I cannot stress enough how serious this crisis is and how important it is that you follow the recommendations given. You have been a part of our family for 7 or 8 years and we care about each other to be supportive. Please, please, please follow the advice. Stay safe. Be well. Erma
