Found cat in the Killarney-Bankview area! Baby-Boo was brought to us this morning and he does have a microchip but the contact information was not updated so we have not had any luck contacting his owners. Baby will be heading to the city this afternoon or tomorrow some time.

Microchipping is important whether your cat is indoor or outdoor! Do you have a story of a microchip or tattoo reuniting you and your cat?

We don't see many true Maine Coon's in the clinic, so when we do see one we are always surprised by their size! Jasper is definitely a prime example of how big these cats get!

Spring has sprung! The warmer weather means your little feline friend may be more interested in going outside and you may be more concerned about them coming in contact with fleas. Over the counter flea medication may seem tempting when you see it at the pet store, but it is important that you do not use anything on cats not labelled specifically for cats! Dog flea medications contain permethrin, which is the most common cause of seizures in cats. This can happen when a dog f...lea-prevention product is applied to a cat or when the cat licks a recently treated dog, presses up against him or rests in the same spot. The easiest treatment for permethrin poisoning is prevention. Do not use any flea products not labeled for cats on cats, and if you have both dogs and cats in your household either use a permethrin free parasite protection on your dog, or keep them separate for 72 hours to prevent transfer. The #poisonpreventionweek focus for today is essential oils! In their concentrated form (100%), essential oils can absolutely be a danger for pets. Dogs and cats who have either walked through oils, gotten some on their coat or had oils placed directly on them can develop health concerns. Symptoms include:... Unsteadiness on the feet Depression Low body temperature (in severe cases) If a pet ingested concentrated essential oils, you may see vomiting, diarrhea and depression, as well. Some oils may in fact be more harmful than others. However, there are several factors that affect this such as concentration level, and what the product is mixed with. For example, concentrated forms of tea tree oil (melaleuca oil) may cause issues for your pets with only seven or eight drops, whereas another oil may take more or less. Due to the variability in concentration, formulation and possible quality of essential oils, it is best to completely avoid directly applying them to your pet. You should also keep any oils up and out of paws' reach to prevent potential ingestion.

The #poisonpreventionweek focus for today is Marijuana While many times marijuana ingestion is not life-threatening for pets, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t still some concerns. Signs pets commonly show after ingesting marijuana or marijuana products include unsteadiness on the feet, depression, dilated eyes, dribbling urine, sensitivity to sound and touch, slow heart rate and even low body temperature. However, one thing to consider is that nowadays there are many highly concentrated forms of marijuana available. If a pet gets into a product with a higher concentration, or large quantities of marijuana, more serious concerns are possible. Your pet may show signs of low blood pressure, agitation, seizures or even aspirate. In rare cases, death has occurred.

Our next pretty kitty is Jayme's other cat, Kiwi Kiwi is 5 years old and such a gentle cat. She was adopted at 9 months old from AARCS and is the sister to Molly. She loves to lay on my lap lap while I am reading, but will only lay down on the fleece side of the blanket and not the fluffy side. She likes to chase her sister around the house. You’ll usually find her napping in the bedroom, buried in the duvet.

Together with the rest of the nation, we are remembering and honouring our veterans. The legacies of different generations of Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice as well as the men and women who are serving today must always be remembered. Their bravery, strength and skill helped safeguard and create the freedom that we have today. May we never take for granted all they have done for us and for our country. #RemembranceDay #LestWeForget

The next feline feature is our RVT Amy's cat Echo! Echo was found in a Ranchlands dumpster with her two brothers when they were about 7 weeks old. A passerby happened to hear them meowing and brought them into the clinic where I was working at the time. I took her and one of her brothers home. Echo is going to be 16 soon and she is doing great for an old lady! She LOVES her Da Bee and all other toys pale in comparison. May as well throw all other toys away actually.... It’s just the two of us because her brother sadly passed at 3 years old. She isn’t a snuggly lap cat, but she does love bedtime and she purrs and kneads on me...on her terms of course! See more

The next staff feature is Dr. Tayler Belosowsky's sweet boy, Tazer I got Tazer as a kitten about 4 years ago when he was brought into my former clinic from a hoarding situation. He was named after Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks and his nickname is Tazey Woat. Tazer is very sweet but is shy around strangers. Tazer’s favorite things to do are cuddle with his brother, eat (any food he can get his paws on) and play with pipe cleaners.
