Kinosayo Museum 11.01.2021

Today the flag at the Kinosayo Museum is at half mast in order to honor the life and dedication of our long time board member, Karen McLaughlin. Karen has been a volunteer for the museum since the day it was formed back in 1983. She was likely persuaded by her mother in law, and our first president, Vera McLaughlin. Which I find humourous, as this year she persuaded her grandaughter Kasey to join us. She became a board member in 1990, and our treasurer in 2004. She dedicated... almost forty years to our organization. In this time, she never missed a meeting, a bingo, a casino, any special event and each year sold more raffle tickets than all other board members combined. Taking care of a charities money, counting pennies, dealing with grant applications, payroll, reports to the government, gaming licencing etc is an important time consuming job. She also had a full time job keeping our current president on top of things, encouraging her to move forward, or filling in gaps for her, something that will always be appreciated by myself personally forever. She did it all well, completely on a volunteer basis. Karen didn't like the spotlight, and was often behind the scenes making things work for those in the spotlight. She was a very humble, dedicated, hard working woman. Karen was not born in Kinuso, however, when she was very young she moved to Kinuso, for a year or two she told me once (haha), to start teaching. Her career began in 1960. She remained, and dedicated her entire life to Kinuso and surrounding communities. She taught at Kinuso School for over forty years. She never taught anywhere else. At the end of her career she told me she was teaching some grandchildren of her first students. Not only did she balance her career in this area, she also raised community minded kids, and Grandchildren. On top of this, she was the community seamstress, proud farmer, major volunteer for 4H, the WI, the Kinuso Legion, our local Seniors Center, among others. She was a key vendor in local farmers market. Thank you Karen for your decades of service and thousands of volunteer hours to the museum and community in general. Even if you preferred to be behind the scenes, we still noticed and appreciated you. The entire museum board and staff sends our condolences to the entire McLaughlin family in Kinuso, and McCuaig family in Saskatchewan. Thank you for sharing Karen with us. She will be missed. The board and curator met tonight for our planning meeting. We preserve the past but also look at the future. Some exciting things coming for our museum as we continue to work hard to preserve local history! We were also supplied with a treat! One of our great local businesses dropped off some complimentary lemonades to help keep us refreshed, and to thank the hard working volunteers! Thanks Michelle Davis and Landon Robinson!
