Local Business Shout Out! @carorestaurant This weekend Dr. Seeley’s family took home a few make-your-own-pizza kits from one of our favourite east end restaurants: @carorestaurant . Spoiler; they were unbelievable! Fun to make for all ages, and a full of the deliciousness we have come to expect from Caro. Consider this our vote to make this a permanent feature on their take out menu! One of Hamilton’s best qualities is the city’s variety of local businesses. As we all know, ...small businesses have been hit hard by this pandemic, and many have been forced to close. Supporting local businesses strengthens our communities and helps keep Hamilton great. Choose local if and when you can! #caro #shoplocal #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocal #pizzatime #communitylove #hamont #thehammer #spinecentre

Thursday April 15, Day 4: Hamilton Food Share! On the 4th day of our @5daysforgood , Dr. Seeley visited the Hamilton Food Share ( @hamiltonfoodshare ) warehouse to donate non-perishable food on behalf of @spine_centre . Hunger hasn’t gone anywhere during this pandemic, and Hamilton Food Share remains open to accept non-perishable food donations at 339 Barton Street, side entrance Bay 1. As the hub of the Emergency Food Network within the city, Hamilton Food Share raises food ...and funds for emergency food programs including food banks and hot meal programs in neighbourhoods across Hamilton. Since its inception in 1988, Hamilton Food Share has evolved from a grass roots collective action of six food banks to a community wide non-profit, nondenominational registered charity with nine member agencies. Supplying food to 14 local food banks, the organization raises over 3.35 million pounds of donated food annually, 83% of which is raised from the food industry; a crucial resource that was previously unaccessible to to local emergency food programs, due to key food industry standards for shipping, receiving and storing of donated supplies. **While you can donate non-perishable food to the Barton Street warehouse in a contact-free manner during lockdown, the safest way to support Hamilton Food Share is by making an online donation through their website: www.FeedTheHamnmer.com . #5daysforgood #communitysupport #communitylove #foodbankscanada #fighthunger #hamiltonfoodshare #feedthehammer #hamont #thehammer #spinecentreThur

Wednesday April 14, Day 3: CityKidz! We continue our 5 Days for Good ( @5daysforgood ) with @citykidz . For nearly a decade, @spine_centre has been a supporter of one of Hamilton’s phenomenal non-profit organizations: CityKidz ( @citykidz ). As many of our long-standing patients and friends know, this organization was near and dear to Dr. Roberta Koch’s heart, and Dr. Seeley is proud to carry on this tradition in her honour. For over 25 years, @citykidz has been running incre...dible programming for Canadian children living in low-income communities, with the mission of increasing resiliency by providing inspirational experiences and nurturing personal relationships, one child at a time. The ultimate goal of this fantastic enterprise being: That one day, in the not so distant future, we will see the end of child poverty in Canada and every child [will] have equal opportunity to thrive, to dream big and to reach their full potential. -www.citykidz.ca **A crucial part of this non-profit addresses the barriers to service and gaps in support; with free transportation to programs as well as weekend and summer programming, CityKidz helps to seal some of the gaps that kids may fall through. Visit www.citykidz.ca to find out how you can support this amazing organization. #5daysforgood #communitysupport #communitylove #citykidz #kidsareourfuture #strongertogether #brightfutures #dreambig #hamont #thehammer #spinecentre

Tuesday April 13, Day 2: Beautiful Alleys! As we enter into the 2nd day of our 5 Days for Good ( @5daysforgood ), we wanted to support a fantastic community-building initiative: Hamilton’s homegrown volunteer group, Beautiful Alleys. We first heard about this awesome program from Ward 3 City Councillor Nrinder Nann ( @nrinder_ward3 ). Beautiful Alleys ( @beautifulalleys ) is a volunteer group supported by the following City of Hamilton Departments: Keep Hamilton Clean and Gre...en, Waste Management and Neighbourhood Development. A key goal of the organization is for alleys and laneways to serve as safe, accessible and beautiful spaces that residents can take pride in. While the group organizes large scale cleanups in Spring and Fall, we wanted lend our own support to the program under current lockdown restrictions. Dr. Seeley’s household geared up and took to the back alleys of @spine_centre Blakely neighbourhood to do our part in picking up trash to help beautify our community. Next step: commissioning a community mural?? Check out Beautiful Alleys ( @beautifulalleys ) on Facebook or their website www.beautifulalleys.ca to learn how you can help support this fantastic initiative. #5daysforgood #communitysupport #communitylove #beautifulalleys #springcleaning #trashpickup #neighbourhoodpride #blakely #hamont #thehammer #spinecentre

Monday April 12, Day 1: Hamilton Burlington SPCA! As we posted last week, @spine_centre was nominated by @lodidthat to join her in doing good, and spreading love and strength in our community by joining the @5daysforgood movement! Today we kick off the first of our 5 days of goodness by supporting one of our (and our newest family member Margot’s) favourite organizations: @hamiltonburlingtonspca ! Since 1887, the SPCA has served it’s mission of animal protection through com...munity programs, affordable vet care, shelter and foster care, pet visits for isolated individuals the list goes on. We were able to purchase a number of goods from the @hamiltonburlingtonspca wishlist, and will perform a contactless drop-off to their shelter on Dartnall Road as soon as the lockdown lifts. Sciatica? Hip or Back Pain? Try This: Stretching the piriformis (the muscle that runs across the top of your glutes) can help relieve hip, back and sciatic pain. Frequently referred to as a ‘Figure 4 Stretch’, this stretch is safest for those without hip or knee ligament issues. 1. Start by laying on your back. ... 2. Bend your left knee, while your left foot remains on the floor. 3. Bring your right ankle to your left knee, opening your right knee to the right side of your body. 4. Stabilize your right knee with your right hand, and lift your left foot from the floor. 5. Try to keep your back in a neutral position, flat to the floor. 6. Hold this raised position for 5-8 seconds. **Repeat 6-8 times each side** #sciaticarelief #sciatica #backpain #stretching #piriformisstretch #piriformis #chiropractic #physiotherapy #massagetherapy #hamont #thehammer #spinecentre

What is SI joint Pain? SI joint connects the hip bones to the sacrum. Pain in this joint happens with the ligament becomes too loose or too tight, and it can be dull or sharp. The pain may start at your SI joint and move to your buttocks, thighs, groin, or upper back. Sometimes standing up triggers the pain, and it can be isolated to one side of your body. You may notice that it bothers you more in the morning and gets better during the day.... Experiencing SI joint pain? Try this exercise from Yoga International: 1. Lie on your back, bend your knees, and place your feet on the floor so your knees are stacked over your ankles. Make sure there’s a gentle inward curve in your lower back; allow your arms to rest alongside your body. 2. Bring the sole of your right foot to your left thigh just above the kneecap. 3. Press your left foot into the mat, push your right foot into your left thigh, and squeeze and lift your right buttock until your left thigh and torso make one continuous diagonal line (or as much of one as you can comfortably make), with your right hip lifted slightly higher than your left. Hold here for one breath. 4. Tuck your chin to your chest to lift your head slightly off the mat, holding for another breath or two. 5. Lower your head, keeping your hips raised for one more breath. 6. Slowly lower your hips. @AndreaKillam @Amberburkeyoga & @bill_reif_pt Model @Serenajetelina #chronicpain #sijointpain #chiropractic #physiotherapy #massagetherapy #yoga #spinecentre

Chiropractors Fighting the Opioid Epidemic The Globe & Mail states: People with back pain need timely access to non-drug pain management, provided by musculoskeletal experts, and chiropractors are answering this call. Lower back pain is still the number one cause of disability in Canada, and it is also one of the top-four reasons why people visit emergency departments. Chiropractors are musculoskeletal experts who are governed by a very clear scope of practice within Canad...a. Chiropractors complete more than 4,200 hours of core competency training in this discipline, and are an integral part of your health care and pain management team. According to the 2017 Canadian Guideline for Opioid Therapy and Chronic Non-Cancer Pain, it is recommended that pain management optimizes the inclusion of care provided by chiropractors and other professionals who treat back, neck, and shoulder pain, before considering opioids. Shockwave for Plantar Fasciitis Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of pain in the lower heel, and occurs in athletes and non-athletes alike. The main symptom is pain under the heel that worsens upon waking in the morning, or after sitting; commonly improving after walking or by end of day. Shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues. The energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and... other soft tissues. This approach is an especially effective treatment for injuries that are not responding to first line treatments, such as rest, ice, therapeutic exercise, bracing and orthotics. Koch & Associates is proud to offer shockwave as an effective treatment for plantar fasciitis, as well as a variety of other chronic tendinopathies as an alternative option to more-invasive or surgical approaches. Contact us through the link in our bio to book your appointment for Shockwave today. #shockwave #plantarfasciitis #chronicpain #tendonitis #sportsinjury #chiropractic #physiotherapy #massagetherapy #hamont #thehammer #spinecentre

Happy International Women’s Day! A time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities... The world has made unprecedented advances, but no country has achieved gender equality. Fifty years ago, we landed on the moon; in the last decade, we discovered new human ancestors and photographed a black hole for the first time.... In the meantime, legal restrictions have kept 2.7 billion women from accessing the same choice of jobs as men. Less than 25 percent of parliamentarians were women, as of 2019. One in three women experience gender-based violence, still. Let's make 2021 count for women and girls everywhere." - The United Nations Typographic by Katherine Kelly Poem by the late, GREAT, Maya Angelou

It is honestly very difficult for me to put into so few words what Roberta meant to me and the impact she had on my life personally and professionally. Her dedication to her patients, her family and her business is something that I admired from day 1. Her work ethic, her passion, and her spirit were so strong that it simply cannot be overstated. I could not have had a better mentor and I will forever feel a profound sense of gratitude for what she taught me. One thing she sai...d that has always stuck with me was " being a chiropractor is not about you, it is about your patients". She truly believed this and it was undeniably evident working alongside her. The fact that she felt I was the right person to take over what she had built over 40 years is very humbling and truly an honor. I will never forget so many things about Roberta but I have to mention her sense of humor. She was a serious business woman with an incredibly strong will but she loved to laugh. I will always cherish and remember those memories of laughing together. To the entire Koch family: I am fortunate to see everyday first hand the impact she had on so many lives. I saw how much she loved her family; especially her grandchildren. We are all richer in so many ways for having known her. I am deeply and truly sorry for your loss. She has a special place in the hearts of so many. A truly remarkable person who I will miss very much. -Dr. Curtis Seeley

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Roberta Koch on Sunday, November 22nd, 2020. Roberta, a proud Hamiltonian and true pillar of our community, worked in the area while maintaining a strong connection to her family in St. Catharines, and later in Kingston. Known as Dr. Koch to her many patients, she graduated from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1977, practicing first at the Avenue Clinic, before founding the Koch Spine Centre at 866 Main S...treet East. A well-regarded clinician and professional, Roberta proudly served as President of the Ontario Chiropractic Association from 1989 to 1991 and was awarded Ontario Chiropractor of the Year in 1993, and a Presidential Citation in 2004. A dedicated member of the Canadian Chiropractic community, Roberta tirelessly served in numerous roles and positions, and was a sought-after speaker and contributor. Locally, Roberta was a staple in the Hamilton Community and gave generously to many local organizations. With unparalleled compassion and dedication, she deeply cared for her many patients, seeking to understand their problems and improve their lives and wellbeing. Thankful for her care and compassion, she will be missed by many patients and colleagues alike. The Koch Spine Centre will continue in the hands of her long-time associate, Dr. Curtis Seeley.
