Dear Students and Friends of KPU Music: Today is a big day for KPU Music! This afternoon we'll present the vision for a new music program at KPU, and this is the first step in our journey through the university's curriculum-approval channels. As some of you may know, over the summer a team of faculty members from the Music Department developed a new music program, and it received approval from the Dean's Office in late August. This is a huge step forward, and a new beginning... for KPU Music. Many negotiations and deliberations lie ahead, but it is our goal to have this program in place for September 2020. Today is the day when it all begins. Please wish us luck! Dr. Tones

Georgia Straight's Alexander Varty comments that the music and playing of Jane Hayes and Francois Houle is "sonically vivid and intellectually lively", noting that "if you think the combination of clarinet and piano has limited potential, you’ve not taken into account Sea and Sky’s willingness to experiment, or the genre-jumping options inherent in contemporary music." You don't need to travel into Vancouver or to West Vancouver to hear our featured artists "Sea to Sky" performing two concerts sponsored by the Georgia Straight. This Friday! KPU Music Faculty concert celebrates the release of three faculty CD's, highlighting the professional work of KPU faculty Jane Hayes, Julia Nolan and Jodi Proznick, along with guest musicians. Featured CD: "Chromaticity" - an exploration of musical sound and colour - brings together the talents of saxophonist Julia Nolan, pianist Jane Hayes and violinist Joan Blackman in a recording featuring new and old compositions for both duo and trio combinations. Their ...first performance together was met with a standing ovation and these musicians have not looked back. The full-bodied sound of the saxophone coupled with the warmth and vibrancy of the violin and tonal and dynamic palette of the piano makes this combination aurally stimulating the repertoire is fresh and powerful. It runs the gamut the traditional harmony of Fernande Decruck's Sonata in C#m to jazz inspiration in Fred Stride's Anne-uity No. 1, from the melodic simplicity of Matthew Emery's Walk Softly in Safe Places (written especially for Julia Nolan) to the driving rhythm of Marc Eychenne's Danse.
